The diocese Bangued was on June 12, 1955 by Pope Pius XII. established with the Apostolic Constitution Cum misericos from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia as territorial prelature Bangued . The territorial prelature Bangued was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia as a suffragan . On November 15, 1982, the territorial prelature Bangued was raised to a diocese by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Cum Decessores .

The diocese of Bangued includes the province of Abra .
