The diocese of Jammu-Srinagar ( Latin : Dioecesis Iammuensis-Srinagarensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Jammu in India .

history

The forerunners of the diocese were the missionaries who had lived in Jammu and Kashmir since 1868 . On July 2, 1887, the Apostolic Prefecture of Kafiristan and Kashmir was established from parts of the area of ​​the Diocese of Lahore and the missionaries of the Mission Society of St. Left to Joseph von Mill Hill to manage. Monsignor Ignatius Brouwer MHM was installed as the first prefect on July 13, 1888.

With a reorganization of the dioceses on January 17, 1952, the Apostolic Prefecture of Kashmir and Jammu was first established from parts of the Lahore diocese and the Rawalpindi diocese with its seat in Srinagar ; the first prefect was Monsignor George Shanks MHM. On May 14, 1968 there was a reorganization as the Apostolic Prefecture of Jammu and Kashmir with areas of Kashmir and Ladakh from the diocese of Lahore and Jammu and Poonch from the diocese of Rawalpindi ; the prefecture comprised 14 districts.

Msgr. Hippolytus Kunnunkal OFMCap was appointed the first native prefect on December 28, 1978. He transferred the Apostolic Prefecture to the Diocese of Jammu-Shrinagar and was appointed first bishop by Pope John Paul II on April 10, 1986. On September 7, 1986, with the official elevation to the diocese, the episcopal ordination of Hippolytus Kunnunkal OFMCap in St. Mary's Cathedral in Jammu and the relocation of the bishopric to Jammu took place. On November 25, 1989, the new bishopric in Jammu was inaugurated. St. Paul's Minor Seminary was established in Jammu.

Peter Celestine has been OFMCap Bishop of Jammu-Shrinagar since 1998.
