Overview of the dioceses in Sudan and South Sudan; No. 4 is the Diocese of Rumbek |
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rumbek ( Latin : Dioecesis Rumbekensis ) comprises the districts of Rumbek, Yirol and Shobet in the state of Lakes and the districts of Warab and Tonj in the state of Warrap in South Sudan .
history
The Catholic priest Daniele Comboni (1831–1881) lived as a missionary in Shambe, about 100 km east of Rumbek and began missionary work in Central Africa. In 1877 he became bishop of the Sudanese city of Khartoum . During the Mahdi uprising (1881–1899) all Christian missionaries were expelled from the country. After the British got control of Sudan in 1899, they divided Sudan into confessional areas. Missionary work began again. Almost all of today's South Sudan was assigned to the Anglicans, although a Catholic mission took place again in some cities: In Thiet from 1949, in Rumbek from 1951 and in Tonj from 1953, which were in the Apostolic Vicariate of Bahr al-Ghazal .
On July 3, 1955, parts of the Apostolic Prefecture Mupoi and the Apostolic Vicariates Bahr al-Ghazal and Bahr al-Jabal were combined in the newly established Apostolic Vicariate of Rumbek. The local Ireneo Wien Dud was ordained bishop and first Vicar Apostolic of Rumbek.
In 1964 all foreign missionaries were expelled by the military government. Many clergy fled to neighboring countries. In 1965 the vicar general Fr. Arkangelo Ali was murdered in Rumbek. After that the other clergymen, including the Apostolic Administrator in Rumbek Lino Toboi, left the country. 1974 dioceses were introduced throughout Sudan, so that on December 12, 1974 the Apostolic Vicariate Rumbek was raised to a diocese. Only a single Catholic priest lived in the Rumbek diocese from 1974 to 1981. The diocese was headed from the neighboring Wau .
After a long civil war, reconstruction began in 1991 in some parts of the diocese. During this time, missions arose in the cities of Mapuordit, Marial Lou and Agangrial, which were located off the main roads and to which many refugees had come. In 1997 Bishop Cesare Mazzolari was able to return to the completely destroyed city of Rumbek. In the period that followed, numerous missions could be reopened. South Sudan gained independence in 2011, and Bishop Mazzolari died a week later. Since then the diocese has been headed by Fernando Colombo as diocesan administrator.
