Bizarro Welt is a German-speaking punk rock band from Naturns in South Tyrol , Italy . She is best known for her ironic lyrics and the comparatively short, mostly aggressively played pieces. The band describes itself as "village bells" and their style of music as "glampunk" or "garbage can rock". So far, five studio albums have been released. In 2016, a card game dedicated to the band was presented.

history

The band was founded in 2009 in Naturns in Vinschgau by childhood friends Daniel Rainer, Thomas Pircher and Thomas Unterthurner. All members had previously played in several other bands, Rainer and Unterthurner most recently with Kamikaze One Hundred . Since one could not agree on a drummer, an electronic drum kit from the Japanese manufacturer Roland was resorted to out of necessity , which has since been sold as the fourth member of the band under the name "Trappele" ("small device" in South Tyrolean dialect). The exact origin and meaning of the band name "Bizarro Welt" is not known. The band logo, the “bag”, was created spontaneously by Thomas Pichler, transferred to a digital template with Microsoft Paint and then retained due to its high recognition value.

The doctors , the Ramones and Turbonegro , among others , are named as important influences .

In the founding year 2009, the first album entitled Mülltonnenrock Vol. I was released. All stylistic elements (see style ) that are still in use today can be found on this album . In 2011 the album Mülltonnenrock Vol. II was released , which includes a German-language cover version of the title Denim Demon by Turbonegro and a punk version of the title Her mit mein Hennen by the Klostertaler group . A music video was released for the title Dorfrebellen . In 2012 the "Mülltonnenrock Trilogy" came to a close with the album Mülltonnenrock Vol. III . After the band had previously stubbornly refused to perform in public, the first live performance took place at the Rock the Lahn Festival in front of around 1000 spectators. Later in the year the compilation Mülltonnenrock appeared , which contains all albums released up to then.

On December 14, 2013, the album Klimmzüge der Herzen was released, which contains a punk version of the title s'Motorradl by Sepp Messner Windschnur . In the same year, performances at the Ghosttown Festival in Prad am Stilfserjoch and the traditional Open Air GAUL in the Gaul Gorge near Lana followed . Music videos were published for the titles Vegas, Naturns, Unser Frau and 55.5% (Mediocre) . The specially composed title FCO was added to the sampler Mir singen dei Liader nitt for money from the Obermais football club's fan club .

In 2014 and 2015 Bizarro Welt performed at several concerts, including Dropkick Murphys , Airbourne and numerous other bands at the Rock im Ring Festival on Ritten , as well as Terror , Deez Nuts , The Casualties and other bands at POISON FEST! in Bozen , and with Homes 4 Life in Vienna.

The release of the album Hirnfaul on April 1, 2016 was accompanied by several performances at home and abroad, including the Donots , Flogging Molly , The Hives , Itchy Poopzkid and other bands in front of 7,000 spectators at the Rock im Ring Festival on Ritten. The album contains a duet with the title Talentfrei with the rapper Manuel Profunser of the group Homes 4 Life. On December 23, 2016, the card game ACHTUNG ACHTUNG went on sale (see section Card Game ). The music video for cotton candy / caries was followed by two more videos for the titles So should it be and lazy brains . In April 2017 the MC 1000 Years BIZARRO WELT - All Greatest Hits was released. In May 2017 Bizarro Welt performed again at the Open Air GAUL , Manuel Profunser accompanied the performance as a guest singer.

The sixth studio album Stützkind was released on May 11, 2019, including a limited edition on vinyl.

style

Musically, mainly classical punk rock elements are used, and the division into vocals, electric guitar, electric bass and drums corresponds to that of many other bands from the same genre. Individual pieces make use of other sub-genres of rock 'n' roll or, for example, the western genre or electro . The drum computer usually sets a high rate (up to over 220 beats per minute ), the guitar chords are played aggressively. An average track lasts around a minute and 40 seconds, making it shorter than many tracks by comparable bands.

The three albums of the "Garbage Can Rock Trilogy" typically contain a larger number of less than 40 seconds long, mostly spontaneously recorded pieces, which range from simple voice recordings and background noise to actual, very short music tracks. The albums Klimmzüge der Herzen and Hirnfaul, on the other hand, contain longer and more elaborately produced titles on average.

A wide range of topics are dealt with in the text, but always in a very ironic way. Recurring topics are aggression, senseless violence ( brawl ), laziness, girls (six titles spread over four albums), the general insulting of the audience ( you wanker ), as well as the critical handling of everyday issues in South Tyrol (right-wing groups in flag in the ass , customs and alcoholism in Stubenmusi Deluxe , excessive tourism in foreigners ). The vast majority of the texts are in Standard German , a few in the South Tyrolean dialect. A recurring character is the "Waldmensch" (four tracks spread over four albums).

The live performances are characterized by a strong, provocative interaction with the audience as well as many elements that are rather untypical for the "classic" punk rock scene. The band members appear in particularly kitschy and / or ironic clothing, for example, and confetti cannons are used several times. The audience is encouraged to lower their pants or form a polonaise (usually during the On the Beach title ). Occasionally, different variations of the Wall of Death are called, such as a "Wall of Love". At a concert the audience unexpectedly brought about 20 bicycles from outside into the hall after the joking proposal to form a "Wall of Radl".

The look of the album covers and music videos is deliberately kept in a rather simple style, but some of the videos were produced with great effort. Card game

In September 2016, some pictures of playing cards were published on the band's Facebook page, but without any explanatory context. This was followed by further information and on December 4, 2016, the publication of a trailer that presented the card game "ACHTUNG ACHTUNG", which was developed together with a German graphic artist. The game went on sale on December 23, 2016, and an additional app for devices with the Android operating system was released at the same time .

CAUTION CAUTION consists of 54 comic-style illustrated playing cards and is roughly based on the lyrics of the Bizarro World title Bizarro Planet of the Apes . The players try to neutralize playing cards printed with a “genetically mutated monkey” by playing a “Fighting” card, while the number of “Fighting” cards available in the game is steadily decreasing and other cards also have a negative impact on the course of the game. The last player still in play wins.

The limited “maximum edition” of the card game, which in addition to the game also included other encores, was later named “probably the most beautiful release of 2016” by the Neue Südtiroler Tageszeitung . The music editors of the Neue Südtiroler Tageszeitung voted Bizarro Welt among the five best bands of 2014 and 2016, the album Klimmzüge der Herzen as the best album of 2013 and the video for the song 55.5% (average) as the best video of 2013.
