History and geography

Blantyre was founded in 1895 as the first city in Central Africa . Blantyre is the oldest modern city in Malawi and got its name from the Scottish city of Blantyre , where missionary and African explorer David Livingstone was born. Blantyre has around 800,000 inhabitants (2018 census). The population increases significantly. A population of 4.3 million is expected by 2050.

Blantyre, located at 1,039 meters above sea level in the Shire highlands , is together with its sister city Limbe the second largest city in Malawi and the economic center of the country. Numerous Malawian and international companies have their headquarters or offices in Blantyre. Blantyre is the capital of the southern region of Malawi and has a presidential palace. Infrastructure

traffic

Blantyre has a good infrastructure for Malawi, which can only be compared with that of the capital Lilongwe . The main roads are paved. There is local public transport based on regular buses and private minibuses, sewage disposal and a secure supply of electricity and water. Health care is provided by a central public hospital that is well-equipped for Africa, as well as by a number of private clinics.

Blantyre has the second largest airport in the country with the Blantyre Chileka International Airport with the IATA code BLZ. The city lies on a railway line that connects the central districts of Malawi with Mozambique , and is served by numerous national and international bus routes. There are express bus connections between the larger cities.

Educational institutions

With the Polytechnic (technical university), the College of Medicine and one of the two campuses of the Kamuzu College of Nursing , three of the five colleges of the University of Malawi are located in Blantyre. There are also various schools, including an English high school with boarding school. The British Council and the Institut Français are each represented with a cultural center. Halfway between Limbe and Blantyre is the National Museum .

More companies and architecture

Also, publishers and print media as well as the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) have their headquarters in Blantyre. The residential quarters are either spacious villa areas or customary, one-story “seven-meter houses” with tin roofs and glass windows, which are very different in terms of their furnishings and quality. The Kamuzu Stadium has hosted numerous national and international football matches since it opened in 1964.

Town twinning

Blantyre is twin town of the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover and the Taiwanese city Kaohsiung .

Attractions

The most eye-catching building in town is the Saint Michael and All Angels Church. The church was built from 1888 to 1891 under the direction of David Clement Ruffell Scott , a British missionary with no experience in architecture . The oldest preserved building in the city is the Mandala House from 1882. It was built as a support depot for European missionaries and pioneers and now houses a gallery, a library and an exhibition on the history of Malawi . Another attraction are the tobacco auctions that take place in the city every day.
