Blerim Džemaili , Albanian spelling Blerim Xhemaili (born April 12, 1986 in Tetovo , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Swiss football player .

Career

In his youth, Džemaili played for FC Oerlikon (now FC Oerlikon / Police), FC Unterstrass and SC Young Fellows Juventus . The midfielder began his professional career in 2003 with FC Zurich , with whom he became Swiss champions in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons .

In February 2007 it was announced that Džemaili was moving to Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2007 . On April 14, 2007 he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture while training at FC Zurich and was out for months. For the 2008/09 season , Džemaili moved on loan for a year in the Italian Serie A for Turin , who drew his purchase option in 2009. The seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11 played Džemaili on loan from Serie A promoted FC Parma . In the summer of 2011 he moved to SSC Napoli . From summer 2014 he played for Galatasaray Istanbul; with the team he became 2015 Turkish champion, cup winner and Supercup winner. At the end of August 2015 Blerim Džemaili was loaned to Serie A again, this time to CFC Genoa .

On August 17, 2016, the midfielder moved to Bologna FC for 1.3 million euros .

In May 2017, Džemaili moved to Montreal Impact on loan . In January 2018 he returned to Bologna FC.

National team

On March 1, 2006 Džemaili played his first game for the Swiss national football team , with whom he also traveled to Germany for the 2006 World Cup . He celebrated his greatest success with the U-19s when they reached the semi-finals at the 2004 European Championships in their own country and only lost 3-2 to Turkey in extra time. Džemaili was taken to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil by coach Ottmar Hitzfeld . In the second game against France he scored a free kick there. He had already scored once in the World Cup qualification. In the round of 16 against Argentina, he failed shortly before the end of extra time at the opposing post, which would have enabled the equalizer and a penalty shoot-out.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Swiss squad. He was in the starting line-up in all four tournament games. The second game against Romania was his 50th international match. In the round of 16 against Poland, he was substituted after 58 minutes with a 0-1 deficit. The team saved themselves in extra time, but lost the penalty shootout and was eliminated.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Swiss squad . He was used in all four games and scored one goal. With the team he was eliminated in the second round.

Blerim Džemaili has Albanian roots. His parents moved with him to Switzerland when he was four years old. From 2006 to 2010 he was with the Benissimo assistant and Vice Miss Switzerland of 2003 Barbara Megert .

The book of poems, Yellow against Džemaili , published in 2006, has his name in the title.
