Gut feeling is a German television film by Franziska Meletzky from 2009 . It is the fifteenth episode of the Bloch television series .
This time Maximilian Bloch has to take care of an anorexic patient, which shows him his own problem, the food addiction.
action
Petra Engelhardt asks Maximilian Bloch to look after her anorexic daughter. For the past three years, Jana has been losing weight, so that she has now reached a threatening state of health. Reluctantly Jana agrees to undergo therapy. She denies having eating disorders and even in front of the mirror she thinks she is too fat. Bloch first tries to whet her appetite for food and takes her to a posh restaurant. While he has eaten quickly, Jana says she wants to enjoy the whole thing, while she secretly lets most of the bites disappear into a napkin. However, he can only start his therapy when she is eating properly again and has reached a normal body weight. Since he can't get on with her in this regard, he asks his friend Clara to take Jana to “her” soup kitchen for the homeless. There she finds a fellow sufferer who has already overcome his anorexia nervosa and gives her courage.
Bloch only slowly discovers what could be behind the problems. Jana had a friend Melli, who meant a lot to her. Exactly three years ago she died of anorexia. He talks to Jana about it and both of them actually think it's nonsensical that she longs for a condition from which her friend has died. Jana's mother is more of the opinion that it all started with her boyfriend Frank. However, the parents' concern is also a reason for Jana's flight into illness. Her mother wants to overprotect her, while her father doesn't give her enough freedom. At a work lunch, for example, Jana has to hide from the guests because her father is embarrassed to see her.
When the regular eating and the company in the soup kitchen bring the first successes and Jana has gained three kilograms, she is horrified and runs home. She immediately tries to work off the "kilos" again and no longer wants to go to Bloch for therapy. Her father insists that she then go to a clinic. But on the first day she runs away again. On the same day, her boyfriend Frank calls Bloch because Jana collapsed, totally exhausted. It turns out that Frank is Melli's father and Jana visits him regularly. She refuses to go back to the clinic because everyone there would look like Melli.
Bloch realizes that Jana's strange relationship with Frank, who is much older and has a heart condition, is not good for her. When he has to go to the hospital and she visits him immediately, he reproaches her for hardly taking care of him. Bloch wants to talk to him and notices that he sees his daughter Melli in Jana and it is clear to the therapist that this is the trigger for Jana's illness. As long as she takes on the role of Melli for his sake, the vicious circle cannot be broken. As Jana breaks off the therapy again, Bloch arranges for her to be taken to a hospital and force-fed. There he speaks to her again and now learns that Jana blames herself for Melli's death because she had made her friend lose weight and then she could not stop. After that she was afraid that something might happen to Melli's father too, so she tried to replace his daughter. Since Jana also realizes that things cannot go on like this, she says goodbye to Frank and continues therapy with Bloch.

Reviews
Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv said: “If Franziska Meletzky's film weren't from the 'Bloch' series, it could well have been called 'Jana'. Even if the psychologist sees himself confronted with himself 'gut feeling' (the first 10 minutes), his patient is the person who attracts the emotions for almost 90 minutes. For viewers with a great willingness to empathize, this film can become an ordeal. It is the nervous frivolity, the addictive character that arouses pity. And it is the authentic force of Maria Kwiatkowsky, the image of her sickly gaunt Jana, that makes you forget the conventions of the TV series and the dramaturgical crutches (to explain the disease) more than in other 'Bloch' episodes. "
Tilmann P. Gangloff from Kino.de says about this film: “Author Marco Wiersch managed to get rid of all clichés from the fashion disease. He does not even bother with references to conveyed ideals of beauty ('Germany's Next Top Model'). Director Franziska Meletzky, on the other hand, tells the story as a captivating duel between two strong personalities. [...] The design and management of the secondary characters are less successful. Jana's father (Lutz Blochberger) is a career-fixated ignoramus, her mother (Margarita Broich) is annoying simply because she reflexively turns curls in stressful situations. The scenes of the therapist and patient are all the better, especially since the image design (Hubert Schick) always takes Jana's weird perspective. "
The TV Spielfilm gave the film the best possible rating (thumbs up) and wrote: "Pfaff [...] shines here again as a psycho heavyweight, but the resolution is a bit too melodramatic and implausible." Conclusion: "Humorous therapy with small quirks. "
