Life

Spiethoff was born as the son of the dermatologist Bodo Spiethoff (1875–1948) and his wife Gerta, geb. Kamp born in Jena . He was a nephew of the economist Arthur Spiethoff (1873-1957) and a grandson of the social reformer and publicist Friedrich Spiethoff . After the end of the Second World War and the relocation of the von Leipzig family to the American occupation zone, Spiethoff began studying economics at the LMU Munich in the winter semester 1945/46 . At the end of 1948 he was already working on “The guaranteed annual wage. Analysis of an American attempt to secure wage income " PhD .

Until mid-1951, Spiethoff worked as a scientific assistant to his doctoral supervisor Adolf Weber at the LMU Munich; then he made the switch to economic practice. In September 1951, Rudolf Zorn commissioned him to set up an economics department at the Bavarian Savings Banks and Giro Association. In addition to his work as director of this department, Spiethoff also took on the credit assessment and press and public relations departments over the next few years . From 1970 until his retirement from active service in 1983, he served as the association's vice-president.

In addition, Spiethoff continued to work in the scientific field. From 1952 to 1997 he held a lectureship on changing topics from political economy at the Munich School of Politics ; Furthermore, in 1959 he was given a teaching position for savings bank management at the LMU Munich, which he completed until 1989. As an economist, Spiethoff belonged to the neoclassical school represented by Adolf Weber and the founders of the social market economy in the Federal Republic of Germany . His main interest in this research field was political economy. Apart from various contributions to the debate about the role of the state in economic life, he primarily dealt with questions of wage and price policy , as well as arms financing . An international study commissioned by the Verein für Sozialpolitik examined the process of integrating the Sudeten Germans into the Bavarian economic system. There was also work on various topics from the savings bank sector; such as the savings deposit or the savings bank loan. As part of his association activities, Spiethoff also published a series of papers on practical economic education and teaching in the German Sparkasse publishing house . The two late works “Small Economics” and “Money - Credit - Currency”, which were repeatedly expanded and expanded until 1990, saw numerous new editions.

Spiethoff has made lasting merits with his research into economic history . He published a general outline of the history of the economy and economics in 1952 in the "Handbuch für Sozialkunde". Six years later, he presented the first basic overview of the history of the Bavarian savings banks with “Unwanted to the size”, which was followed by many other publications and lectures on the subject. Methodically, Spiethoff was committed to establishing oral history within his specialist field.
