Bon Secour is an unincorporated community in Baldwin County in the state of Alabama in the United States . The place was hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 .

geography

Bon Secour is located in southwest Alabama in the southern United States. It is located about 4 kilometers east of Bon Secour Bay , a bay adjacent to Mobile Bay, and 8 kilometers north of the Gulf of Mexico . About 9 kilometers southwest of the village is the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge on a peninsula .

Nearby locations include Gulf Shores (1 km southeast), Foley (4 km northeast), Orange Beach (8 km southeast), Magnolia Springs (9 km north), and Elberta (16 km northeast). The next larger city, with 195,000 inhabitants, is Mobile, about 45 kilometers to the north-west .

history

In the late 19th century, Bon Secour was a French fishing village . A post office was opened in 1875. Fisheries have been active here since the 1890s.

Over the past few decades, the site has been hit by strong hurricanes several times: in 1979 by Hurricane Frederic , in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan and in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina . The latter is considered to be one of the most devastating natural disasters in United States history. In 2010, the local environment and economy were badly damaged by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico .

Four houses in Bon Secour are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of June 30, 2019, including the Orrell House .

Alabama State Route 59 runs about 4 kilometers east of the village, and US Highway 98 runs 10 kilometers north , which connects to US Highway 31 , US Highway 90 and Interstate 10 about 40 kilometers north .

Jack Edwards Airport is located about 3 kilometers southeast of the village , Foley Municipal Airport is 12 kilometers north and HL Sonny Callahan Airport is 21 kilometers northwest .

Demographics

The 2000 census showed a population of 302, spread over 148 households. The population density was 89 people per square kilometer. 96.4% of the population were white and 1.7% Indian. 0.3% were of a different ethnicity , 1.7% had two or more ethnicities, and 1% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were 89 men. The average age was 37 years.

By the 2010 census , the population had increased by more than 220% to 743.
