Borek (German Walddorf ) is a district of the town of Szczytna ( Rückers ) in the powiat Kłodzki in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. It is located one kilometer northeast of Szczytna.

geography

Borek lies between the Heuscheuergebirge and the Habelschwerdter Gebirge and is reached via a cul-de-sac that branches off the main road towards Polanica-Zdrój . Neighboring towns are Borowina in the north, Polanica-Zdrój in the east, Szklarnia and Bystra in the southwest and Ocieszów in the northwest. The Kłodzko – Kudowa Zdrój railway runs south . To the south-west, on the 589 m high Szczytnik, lies the Waldstein Castle ( Zamek Leśna ).

history

After Major Karl Leopold Moritz von Hochberg acquired the Rückers manor in 1827, he built Waldstein Castle on the ruins of a fort from 1790 . He also founded a Waldstein glassworks , which went into operation in 1840. A settlement developed around the hut called the Waldstein estate . As early as 1842, Count Hochberg sold the acquired property to the merchant Bittner. After a number of other owners, including Count August Ludwig von Nostitz and Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau , the Waldstein glassworks and Waldstein Castle came to the brothers Franz and Ferdinand Rohrbach in 1860 .

Since it was founded, Walddorf was incorporated into the Glatz district, with which it remained connected until 1945. The rural community of Walddorf has belonged to the Rückers district since 1874 . In 1913 the district of Walddorf was formed, to which the manor district of Waldstein also belonged. In 1930 the district of Walddorf was dissolved and the rural community of Walddorf was again incorporated into the district of Rückers. On April 1, 1937, the rural communities of Rückers, Hartau and Walddorf were merged to form the new "Community of Rückers".

After the Waldstein glassworks had to cease operations in the 1930s, its workshops and administration buildings were converted into apartments. The Castle Waldstein belonged since 1929 Order of the Holy Family , where she served as a mission house "Regina Pacis". During the Second World War it was converted into a military hospital.

As a result of the Second World War , Walddorf fell to Poland in 1945, like almost all of Silesia, and was renamed Borek . With a few exceptions, the German population was expelled. Some of the new residents were displaced from eastern Poland . Borek remained a district of Szczytna and belonged with this to the Wrocław Voivodeship until 1974 and then to the Wałbrzych Voivodeship until 1998 . In the 1950s, the order of the Holy Family was expropriated and the monks had to leave Waldstein Castle . In 2006 the order got the possessions back by way of restitution.

Walddorf Colony

The northern colony "Försterei Walddorf" was renamed "Borowina" in 1945.

Waldstein glassworks

The Waldstein glassworks had been in operation since 1840 and leased to Franz Losky , the later founder of the Oranienhütte in Schreckendorf, from around 1850 . Even before the lease with Franz Losky expired, the then landlord Hermann von Pückler-Muskau sold the smelter in 1860 to the brothers Franz and Ferdinand Rohrbach, who already operated several glass factories in neighboring Friedrichsgrund . After the death of Franz Rohrbach in 1880, who was the last sole owner of the Waldstein glassworks , his only daughter Helene inherited the property. She was married to Captain Bruno Klein, who modernized the company and also set up well-equipped glass grinding shops that worked successfully and profitably. After Klein's death, his widow Helene and factory director Eugen Knye continued the business. Helene Klein made him a partner in her will. In the 1930s, the company went bankrupt due to the general economic decline.

Attractions

  • Waldstein Castle ( Zamek Leśna ) was built by Karl Leopold Moritz von Hochberg in the style of a knight's castle. The design for the four - wing neo - Gothic castle , which is surrounded by walls and battlements , comes from Karl Friedrich Schinkel . It was built in 1832-1838 and rebuilt in 1892/93. The furnishings of the chapel and the knight's hall from 1893 have been preserved. In 1929 the castle was given to the Order of the Holy Family . The castle chapel now serves as the parish church for Borek.
