The city was founded and named in 1926 after AP "Ace" Borger , a Missouri- born property speculator who was already well-known in Oklahoma , together with his partner John R. Miller , who later became the city's mayor. In March of the same year, after the first promising oil discoveries, they bought 240 acres of land on the Canadian River in the south of the county.

Within three months, the site was divided into individual lots and sold again. In the same time, the black gold had brought around 45,000 people to the new city, which could only be compared to the California gold rush . In the spring of 1927, Governor Dan Moody sent a division of Texas Ranger to the city to enforce the law, but this was not achieved until the troops sent in 1929.

After the years of the Great Depression , the population fell again to around 14,000 in 1943, rose again to over 20,000 by 1960 and fell to 14,302 by 2000.
