Boubakar Ba

Boubakar Ba (born December 29, 1935 in Say , † April 19, 2013 in Paris ; also Boubacar Ba ) was a Nigerien mathematician .

Life

Boubakar Ba was the son of an African employee of the French colonial administration in Diapaga . He went to schools in Diapaga and Fada N'Gourma , followed by a visit to the Modern College in Niamey and the prestigious Lycée Van Vollenhoven in Dakar . There and in Niamey, the later politician Dan Dicko Dan Koulodo was his classmate.

Ba then attended the Institute for Higher Studies, which later became the University of Dakar , as well as the Lycée Hoche in Versailles and the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris . In 1956, he was admitted to the Paris École normal supérieure - the first African in the history of the educational institution. There he made a degree in mathematics in 1959 . In the same year he became a member of the Société Mathématique de France . Ba studied mathematics from 1959 to 1964 at the Center national de la recherche scientifique , interrupted by a study visit to Princeton University from 1961 to 1962. He received his doctorate in 1965.

Ba worked as a lecturer at Dakar University from 1965 to 1968. From 1969 to 1971 he was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Madagascar . In 1971, he was appointed director of the newly established Center d'Enseignement Supérieur in Niamey, which under his leadership was expanded to become the University of Niamey , where he became the first rector in 1973. In 1979 he was replaced by Abdou Moumouni . Ba then continued to teach at Niamey University. He also had lectureships in mathematics at the University of Abidjan and the University of Paris-Nord, among others .

Boubakar Ba retired in Paris, where he died at the age of 78.

Posthumous honors

On February 9, 2018, the Boubacar Ba State University Tillabéri was named after him. On October 5, 2018, President Mahamadou Issoufou posthumously appointed him Grand Officer of the Nigerian Order of Merit.
