Skärholmen
Skärholmen is a district of Stockholm with around 31,000 inhabitants. It has been connected to the center of the city by a line from the Stockholm Metro since the mid-1960s . In the west the district is bounded by the Mälaren .
Districts
Skärholmen
The district is located about 13 km southwest of the city center. Before the extensive development began in 1963, there was agricultural land here. The housing estates were planned as a car-friendly area and thus a parking garage for 4,000 cars was created. Since these parking spaces were never used to capacity, parts of the car park were used as a flea market for a long time and in 2006 these areas were demolished.
The population of Skärholmens consists of 89% citizens with a migration background (as of 2005).
Bredang
Bredäng is the northernmost part of the city district. Between the modern residential buildings, which were built from 1962, and the Mälaren there is a broader forest area. The new development area of Bredäng and other south-eastern suburban areas have been cited as examples of negative urban development in recent years, as there has been increased segregation here . More recent initiatives aim to counteract this development.
Sätra
The district of Sätra lies between Skärholmen and Bredäng and, like them, is characterized by residential buildings from the 1960s. The shopping center at Sätra subway station was the first in Sweden to be fully covered - an inspiration taken from the USA .
Vårberg
Vårberg is the southernmost part of the municipality. It was incorporated into the Stockholm city area on January 1, 1963.
