In the 1920s, a resort was built on what is now the city . The surrounding area became increasingly densely populated, so that in 1939 the "Village of Pelican Lakes" was founded according to the name of the adjacent lake.

Since the name Pelican Lakes led to a number of confusions with similarly sounding localities, a change of the name was decided in 1969. In 1970 the name was changed to Breezy Point .

In 1974, like all incorporated parishes in Minnesota, Breezy Point was granted City status.
