The Bremen Christmas market is held annually in the Advent season in downtown Bremen and is one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany . It extends over various areas of the city center in Bremen's old town , includes around 200 stands and attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually. The traditional Christmas market, which has been held since the middle of the 19th century, takes place mainly on the Bremen market square as well as around the Bremen town hall and on the Domshof .

In addition, the medieval-maritime charm of the Schlachte is held on the banks of the Weser on the Schlachte, as well as a smaller Christmas market in the Lloyd-Passage , which is open until the end of the year . In 2011, the Bremen City Initiative assumed that the total number of visitors had increased to around 2.0 million as a result of the Schlachte Magic, which has been taking place since 2004 . A systematic census from 2015 showed 2.9 million visitors. In 2019 there was a visitor record with 3.2 million visitors.

Traditional Christmas market

The first Christmas market took place in Bremen in 1857. Originally, the Christmas market was located on the market square between the town hall, cathedral and Bremen Roland . Over time, the area was expanded to include the Domshof, the areas around the Liebfrauenkirche and the immediately adjacent part of Obernstrasse as well as the Hanseatenhof and Ansgarikirchhof .

The Bremen Christmas market begins a few days before the first Sunday in Advent and ends on December 23, one day before Christmas Eve . It has between 180 and 200 stands. The individual stands are tents of different sizes, sales halls, booths and rides. The range of products on offer at the market is widely spread and includes, in some cases, Christmas market-specific catering, among other things, Christmas tree decorations , wooden toys and handicraft products .

A study carried out on behalf of the Bremen showmen in the early 2000s showed that the Bremen Christmas market attracts around 1.5 million visitors every year. The traditional Bremen Christmas market "between Schütting , town hall and cathedral" counted around 1.5 million visitors in 2013 as well.

Part of the Christmas market is always a large Christmas tree that is set up on the market square in front of the House of Citizenship . For this purpose, a freshly cut fir tree , which mostly comes from the urban area and is donated for free, is placed in a special steel recess and decorated as a Christmas tree. 2014 was z. B. used a fir tree about 14 meters high and weighing about four tons, which came from a private garden in Bremen- habenhausen . The costs for cutting down, transporting, setting up, decorating and subsequent disposal are taken over by the Bremer Markt working group .

The opening takes place with different ceremonies, whereby Bremen celebrities are also invited to participate. Little surprises are distributed for the children every afternoon at a fixed time. In addition, Christmas stories are read out at fixed times and performances by the Bremen Town Musicians are presented. The opening times of the market in the city center are currently (2014) Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The dismantling still takes place on the evening of December 23rd, so that visitors on December 24th are often surprised by the empty marketplace, which lacks the Christmas atmosphere.

The Bremen Christmas Market is organized by the City of Bremen, represented by the Bremen City Office , which cooperates with the Bremen Markets Working Group .

Because of its special atmosphere in the historical setting on the market square as well as around the town hall, the Roland statue and the town musicians , the Bremen Christmas market is considered "one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany" and "the most beautiful Christmas market in the north" and is advertised accordingly.

Slaughter magic

Schlachte Magic 2012 - View of the Schlachte towards St. Martini Church

Since 2004 the so-called Schlachte Magic has been held on the banks of the Weser, on the upper level of the Schlachte promenade , a Christmas market with a partly medieval-historical and maritime ambience . The special features include the “winter decoration” of the sales huts, “festive lighting” of the partly historic ships that lie at the landing stages of the lower level of the Schlachte on the Weser (such as the Friedrich and the Hansekoggen replica Roland von Bremen ), and the "ice blue light" of a special light decoration on the Schlachte promenade. In wooden huts and at market stalls, various artisans are represented here in addition to a Christmas market offering, some of which is historically or maritime . In addition, the adjacent restaurants , which are located between the Teerhofbrücke and the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Brücke on the Schlachte, offer food and drink in appropriately decorated winter huts on the upper promenade in an " alpine hut atmosphere ".

In 2013 - to connect the Schlachte-Zauber to the traditional Christmas market on the market square - the market was expanded to include the First Battle Gate at St. Martini's Church .

In the so-called “ buccaneer village ”, which is separated by “ defense towers ” made of wood and a high palisade wall, the group of Fogelvrei is staging a medieval market with a maritime character and “in the style of the Hanseatic League ”.

The Schlachte magic takes place at the same time as the Bremen Christmas market ; it starts at the end of November and ends on December 23rd. The opening times of the market on the Schlachte are currently (2014) daily from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., on Saturdays until 10:00 p.m.

Großmarkt Bremen GmbH is the organizer of the Schlachte-Zauber .

In 2014, the magazine Geo counted the Schlachte-Zauber among the "Top Ten Christmas Markets in Germany".

Lloyd-Passage Christmas market

Since the beginning of the 2000s, a smaller Christmas market has been held annually in the inner-city shopping mall Lloyd-Passage . Sheltered from the weather, food and drink as well as gifts are offered in red “Christmas houses” between Hanseatenhof and Sögestraße .

The Lloyd-Passage Christmas market takes place from the end of November to the end of the year. It usually begins a few days before the Bremen Christmas market and the Schlachte Magic and does not end until New Year's Eve . The opening times of the market in the Lloyd-Passage are currently (2014) Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Advent Saturdays until 10:00 p.m. Closed on 1st and 2nd Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve until 2 p.m.
