Brignogan-Plages , including Brignogan-Plage , is a former French community with 735 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Finistère in the region of Brittany .
With effect from January 1, 2017, it was merged with the municipality of Plounéour-Trez by a decree of June 29, 2016 to form the Commune nouvelle Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages and now has the status of a Commune déléguée there.
location
The municipality of Brignogan-Plages was part of the canton of Lesneven in the Arrondissement of Brest and was bordered by the municipality of Kerlouan to the west and by Plounéour-Trez to the east and south . Brignogan-Plages is on the English Channel .
climate
The climate in the place and in the surrounding area is significantly influenced by the ocean . The average temperature in summer is 19 ° C and in winter 5 ° C. There is about 900 mm of precipitation per year. Brignogan-Plages experiences an annual average of around 1750 hours of sunshine.
history
Brignogan was already known as a seaside resort towards the end of the 19th century. The bay Port of Pontusval also served as the port of the nearby Lesneven . Above all, grain was traded. In 1904 a railway line was built that connects Brignogan with Lesneven and Landerneau . The original hamlet only became a municipality in 1934. Before it belonged to Plounéour-Trez .
On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Brignogan-Plages merged with Plounéour-Trez to form the new municipality of Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages.
Surname
There are several theories about the origin and meaning of the name Brignogan. According to the Dictionnaire des Communes, trêves et paroisses du Finistère, éditions du Chasses-Marée (Bernard Tanguy, 1990), the name is made up of the Breton word Bren (hill) and the local and surname Ogan , which was once common there .
The -plages (French beach ) appended to the name of the place was intended to underline its designation as a seaside resort.
