According to the Dictionnaire des Communes, trêves et paroisses du Finistère, éditions du Chasses-Marée (Bernard Tanguy, 1990), the name is made up of the Breton word Bren (hill) and the local and surname Ogan , which was once common there .

The -plages (French beach ) appended to the name of the place was intended to underline its designation as a seaside resort.
