Brodiaea minor is a species of the genus Brodiaea in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It occurs in the western US state of California .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Brodiaea minor grows as a perennial herbaceous plant . Plant tubers are formed as persistence organs . One to six narrow leaves are produced per tuber during the growing season.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period in California is from April to July. The slender inflorescence stem is 10 to 25 inches long. At the end of the inflorescence stem there is an open, golden inflorescence . The bracts also cases, this is still in bud during the inflorescence, not completely. There are also cover sheets . The flower stalk is up to 4 inches long.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. There are two circles, each with three bracts , which are fused at their base. With a width of 3 to 5 millimeters, the three outer bracts are somewhat narrower than the inner three, which are 3.5 to 6 millimeters wide. The six violet bracts have grown together to form a jug-shaped, opaque flower tube with a length of 6.5 to 10.5 millimeters, which narrows above the ovary and does not pop open until the fruit is ripe. The corolla is 18.5 to 29 millimeters long and the free part of the bracts is usually more than twice as long as the flower tube. The free part of the bracts is spread out to upright at a length of 11 to 19 millimeters. In Brodiaea minor, there are three sterile stamens, i.e. staminodes , that resemble small petals and are each opposite to the outer bracts , within the bracts . In the case of the white and 7 to 11.5 millimeters wide staminodes located near the stamens, the edges are 3/4 rolled inwards and the upper end is notched. The three fertile stamens are located opposite the inner bracts and are also fused at the base of the envelope. The stamens are 1 to 3.5 millimeters long. The size and shape of the stamens and the structures at the base of the stamens are important determinants for the Brodiaea species. The anthers are 4 to 6.5 millimeters long. Three carpels are long to a 3.5 to 6.5 mm, three crests membered ovary grown. The 6.5 to 11 millimeter long stylus ends in a three-lobed scar .

The egg-shaped capsule fruits open in folds = loculicide. The seeds are black.

Chromosome set

The basic chromosome number is x = 6; there are different degrees of ploidy with a chromosome number of 2n = 12, 16 or 24.

Occurrence

Brodiaea minor occurs in northern to central California. There are reports that Brodiaea minor is also found in southern Oregon.

It thrives in the grasslands, on pastures, in the chaparral , in the open woodlands of the foothills, on the edge of episodic, ephemeral still waters , sometimes over serpentine rock or gabbro at altitudes of 55 to 1500 meters.

Taxonomy

The first description of the Basionym Brodiaea grandiflora var. Minor Benth. was done in 1857 by George Bentham in Plantas Hartwegianas imprimis Mexicanas , 340. She received the rank of Brodiaea minor (Benth.) S. Watson by Sereno Watson in Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , Volume 14, pages 236. Synonyms for Brodiaea minor (Benth.) S. Watson are since 2006: Hookera minor (Benth.) Britten ex Greene , Brodiaea purdyi Eastw. , Hookera purdyi (Eastw.) A.Heller .

For a long time Brodiaea nana was considered a variety Brodiaea minor var. Nana (Hoover) Hoover published in American Midland Naturalist , Volume 22, Issue 3, 1939, page 566. Niehaus 1971 separated the populations of the three taxa Brodiaea minor (Benth.) S. Watson , Brodiaea nana Hoover and Brodiaea purdyi Eastw. probably not right. Therefore, in 2006, Robert E. Preston reactivated Brodiaea nana Hoover and Brodiaea purdyi Eastw. to a synonym.
