Buckshot LeFonque was an experimental musical project by Branford Marsalis between 1994 and 1997. The band mixed jazz , rhythm and blues and hip-hop influences.
origin of the name
Buckshot LeFonque is a throwback from Branford Marsalis to Cannonball Adderley . In the 1950s this was contractually bound to the Mercury Records label . In order to be able to publish music apart from the publication policy of his parent company - more in the direction of an audience-effective rhythm and blues - Adderley gave himself this pseudonym for his record Here Comes Louis Smith from 1958 .
history
Marsalis started his career in "pure" jazz bands ( Art Blakey , Clark Terry and Miles Davis ). But his international breakthrough came more as an accompanist for well-known pop greats such as Sting , Tina Turner or Bruce Hornsby . From 1992 to 1994 Marsalis headed the band on Jay Leno's late night show . After he had left the show, Marsalis, who was also successful in the field of “classical” music, wanted to use the name Buckshot LeFonque to show his turn to other more popular styles such as hip-hop and rhythm and blues. The project released two albums between 1994 and 1997, including those produced by DJ Premier and with the participation of Brandon Marsalis' brother Delfeayo Marsalis .
