Burak Ozdemir
Burak Özdemir (born October 5, 1983 in Istanbul ) is a German composer , bassoonist , choreographer and director .
introduction
Özdemir is the son of the composer and pianist Cengiz Özdemir, his mother was a ballet dancer. In 2008 he founded at the Juilliard School in New York, the ensemble Musica Sequenza and has since been artistic director of the ensemble, which alter the innovative music and intercultural productions stands. In Berlin he developed his own methods to create new ways of performing. Özdemir's compositions largely consist of the rediscovery of unknown works from the Renaissance to the Classical . His productions range from stage concepts for new music , electro-acoustic performances, dance and experimental theater , opera performances, portrait and discussion concerts , workshops, accompanying programs to CD productions. Özdemir received various awards. In 2005 he was selected by the Istanbul International Jazz Festival for his work Vintage Keys . In the same year, the Young Talents Award from Türkiye İş Bankası followed . In 2010 Özdemir won first prize at the Juilliard Concerto Competition.
Career
education
In 1995 Özdemir began his first piano and bassoon lessons at the Istanbul Conservatory. From 2001 to 2005 he did his Bachelor of Music at Istanbul University . In 2005 he moved to Berlin and studied at the University of the Arts with a focus on bassoon. In 2008 he completed his diploma thesis and went to New York to the Juilliard School, where he was the first bassoonist to receive his Artist Diploma in Performance.
Musicasequencea
As part of his studies at the Juilliard School, Özdemir founded the Ensemble Musicasequencea in 2008. The ensemble is dedicated to innovation in baroque music and aims to develop an intercultural artist movement with musicians, singers, dancers, choreographers, visual artists, architects, designers and filmmakers. The ensemble plays on historical and modern instruments in order to put electronic and early music into a dialogue. The ensemble presents performances with a repertoire from the Renaissance to contemporary composers at opera houses, festivals, concert halls, city theaters, art foundations and museums. With interdisciplinary productions of baroque, new music, electroacoustics , modern dance , performance and experimental music theater, the ensemble is also involved in the contemporary art scene.
Career
Özdemir's productions have been performed in Europe, North and South America and Asia at houses such as the Elbphilharmonie , Berliner Philharmonie , Peter Jay Sharp Theater , Berliner Musikclub Berghain , Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Vienna State Opera and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. He played as a guest with the Istanbul Philharmonic, the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra and L'Arte Del Mondo and collaborated with Sasha Waltz , Matthew Herbert , Werner Ehrhardt , Rolando Villazon , Nicolas McGegan and DJ Ipek , among others .
Özdemir focuses on linking different artistic areas, such as creating a dialogue between choreography and music. At the Festival d'Avignon in 2013 he worked with Sasha Waltz & Guests and composed the music for the project “Dialoge”. The subsequent performance took place in the Opera Avignon. 2016 composed and performed Burak Ozdemir for Sasha Waltz's production of "listening" at Radialsystem V . In the following year he performed with Waltz at the opening of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie with the choreographic installation “Figure Humaine”. In 2013 Burak Özdemir worked with Matthew Herbert for the work “One Day” at the Elbjazz festival. The performance took place in Hamburg's Thalia Theater .
Burak
In 2019 Özdemir released his first album with the stage name Burak on the record company Edel / Neue Meister . The avant-garde album "Hermes" combines electronica with instruments from the 18th century. His accompanying 360 Virtual Reality Music Video “Lyre” was nominated in the category Best Experimental Film at the Berlin Music Video Awards.
As a DJ Burak had appearances in clubs like Sisyphos , KitKat , Kammgarn, Wagenhallen, Berghain, Radialsystem and Bomontiada Istanbul.
Electro-baroque
Burak Özdemir specializes in the revival and research of historical operas and plays, using the means of contemporary performances to place the works in a new context. With his projects he established the new genre of electro-baroque. “Fuga - The Electro-Baroque Opera” was his first opera production, which premiered in 2010 at the Baruch Black Box Theater. In the following projects "Opera del Futuro" (2015) and "Sampling Baroque" (2019) Özdemir also combines the baroque or classical tradition with electronic and audiovisual elements.

Sampling Baroque
In 2015 the Handel Festival in Halle commissioned “Sampling Baroque / Handel”. A year later, the second episode "Sampling Baroque / Bach" was premiered on behalf of the Schaffhausen International Bach Festival in the Kammgarn cultural center . This was followed by performances at the Istanbul Music Festival, the Bachakademie Stuttgart, Berghain, Radial System V Berlin and the Oranjewoud Festival.
Atlas Passion
In October 2018 the world premiere of his project "Atlas Passion" took place in coproduction with the Stadttheater Schaffhausen . "Atlas Passion" is an inter-religious oratorio based on the passion music by Johann Sebastian Bach . Özdemir composed the musical theater in four languages: Hebrew, Arabic, German and Latin. The passions are placed in a current context and include topics such as war, flight, new nationalism and the Middle East conflict , accompanied by questions of faith in the three world religions Christianity , Islam and Judaism .
Transmute
"Transmute" is an improvised production series, the first episode of which was commissioned by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). In 2014 the premiere took place in the Berlin substation as part of the discussion about the shutdown of power plants in Germany. In this digital project, an electro-acoustic composition with accentuated rhythm and constant, recurring elements was created from two areas. For "Transmute" Özdemir researches the sounds of selected public spaces and deals with architectural soundscapes.
Sohbet I Korero
“Sohbet I Korero”, an installation by Burak Özdemir in the Pera Museum , is part of the New Sounds museum series. The aim of this project was to rediscover the museum collections through various artistic expressions of several composers and artists. “Sohbet I Korero” was inspired by the Orientalist Painting exhibition collection, which was performed in November 2018. Özdemir's project “Sohbet I Korero” is an experimental improvisational dialogue between art and music. The visual is transformed into the auditory perception.

Film music
In 2012 Özdemir composed the music for the series “ Götter wie wir ” and in the following year for the film “Lifelong - Hayatboyu”.
In 2015 Özdemir was commissioned by the Grand Palais Museum in Paris, together with Spanish baroque composers, to compose music for the worldwide exhibition of the Spanish baroque painter " Diego Velázquez ". The work, curated and filmed by Karim Ainouz , was later released on DVD by Arte Edition.
