Călacea (German: Kalatscha , Hungarian: Kalácsa , Temeskalácsa ) is a village in Timiș County , Banat , Romania . The village of Călacea belongs to the Orțișoara municipality . In Calacea one of the most important is spas to be found in the west of the country. There are oil and gas deposits on the area of ​​the village .

Călacea is located in the north of Timiș County, 25 kilometers from Timișoara and 30 km from Arad.

history

The first written mention of a village on the area of ​​today's village of Călacea comes from the year 1311 under the place name Kalandava . In 1341 the place appears under the name Kalacha . In 1454 the place is mentioned as Kalocha owned by the Kalocsgi family. Starting with the Turkish period, Calacea is mentioned in the documents.

On the Josephine land survey of 1717, the place Calazzo is registered. After the Peace of Passarowitz (1718), when the Banat became a Habsburg crown domain , Kalatcs was part of the Temescher Banat . On the Mercy map from 1723 the place Kalacs is entered and next to the place the Puszta Kallacs . Callazo appears on the Griselini map from 1776 and Callatzo appears as a Romanian village in Johann Matthias Korabinsky’s dictionary . In 1818 the "Constitutive Basic Book" was written by Kallatcsa . In 1836 the place was named Kalacsa. With the arrival of German families, Kalatscha and dialect Kulaatschi prevailed.

On June 4, 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . The largest, eastern part, to which Calacea also belongs, fell to the Kingdom of Romania . From 1920 Calacea became the official name.

The oil and natural gas deposits discovered on the Dorfhotter in the 1970s are still extracted today.

Spa "Băile Călacea"

In 1905, Countess Iphigenia d'Harcourt had a well drilled on her Kalatscha estate to drink cattle, which, however, did not produce drinking water from a depth of 516 m, but thermal water at 38 °. In 1910 she sold the estate to the Orzydorfer Keller family. When a shepherd was bathing in this thermal water and recovering from rheumatism, the district doctor Josef Parche tested the healing power of the water again on Michael Amsel, who had rheumatism, with the same success.

In 1912, Keller furnished two rooms with bathtubs, and the authorities approved a trial run. After the healing power of thermal water became better known, there were already 5 bathrooms here in 1913. After the First World War, the building was expanded to 20 bathrooms and an inn was opened to cater for the spa guests. Guests from abroad soon came. This is how the “Magdalenahof” and in 1926 the “Marienheim” guest house came into being. The park and flower beds were also laid out during this period. Soon the spa operated by the Keller family offered up to 200 spa guests room and board at the same time. The further development of this spa business was interrupted in 1948 when the Keller family was expropriated as a result of the nationalization law of June 11, 1948 and the spa "Băile Călacea" was nationalized.

As a result, the Kalatscha spa deteriorated until Mircea Meltes took it over in the early 2000s. Today Bad Kalatscha has 70 rooms with double beds, a large restaurant with good cuisine, competent medical staff, an outdoor pool, tennis and soccer field.
