The Bojangles' Southern 500 is a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup , which at the Darlington Raceway in Darlington , South Carolina was held. It was held as a night race on Saturday evening.

The first race was held as a 300-mile race in 1957 and was called the Rebel 300 . From 1966 the distance was extended to 400 miles and from 1973 to 500 miles. From 1994 there was a shortening back to a race distance of 400 miles. After the second race on the racetrack, the Southern 500 , had to be deleted from the racing calendar as a result of the Ferko process , the distance was extended back to 500 miles.
