history
A trading center has been established in Pemba since the 14th century. The Portuguese had a small branch here from the 17th century, but it wasn't until 1904 that the Companhia do Niassa (Njassagegesellschaft) moved its headquarters here.
In 1843 the peoples of Pemba rebelled against Portuguese rule, to which they were liable to pay tribute.
After the First World War , the Kionga triangle on the coast was separated from the previous German East Africa and connected to the colony of Portuguese East Africa (today's Mozambique).
From 1761 to 1929 Ibo was the capital of the Cabo Delgado province, which was then relocated to Porto Amélia , now Pemba.
After Tanzania became independent in 1962, the FRELIMO independence movement operated from there in Cabo Delgado.
There has been a Muslim uprising since 2017, and the Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jama militia is waging a guerrilla war there with several hundred dead. In October 2019, a Russian Wagner mercenary unit was involved in several skirmishes, 10 men fell and were partially beheaded, a larger number were injured, and another 20 soldiers from the Mozambique army are said to have also died. Residents report executions, torture and mutilation. At the beginning of 2020, around 100,000 people were fleeing from the Islamists.
economy
The Quirimbas are a popular destination for tourists. Pemba has an international airport. The province is connected to southern Mozambique from Pemba by the EN1 highway .
