Cairo Fernandes Santos (born November 12, 1991 in Limeira , Brazil ) is a Brazilian American football player on the position of the kicker . Most recently he played for the Tennessee Titans in the National Football League (NFL).

Early years

Santos grew up in Brazil. He later went to Tulane University in Louisiana . In 2012 he won the Lou Groza Award .

NFL

After not being selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, Santos signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on May 19, 2014 . On August 30, 2014, he was named the Chiefs' regular kicker. He prevailed against Ryan Succop before the season . On September 7, 2014, in the game against the Tennessee Titans , he became the first Brazilian player in the NFL. In his first season he converted 25 of 30 field goal attempts and all 38 point-after-touchdown attempts.

In his second season against the Cincinnati Bengals on October 4, 2015, he managed to convert seven field goals, the second highest field goals ever to be scored in a single game.

In the 2016 season, he scored a 54- yard field goal in the game against the Houston Texans , the longest in his career to date. He was also voted AFC Special Teams Player of the Month in November 2016 .

On September 30, 2017, he was released by the Chiefs due to an injury. On November 20, 2017, he signed a contract with the Chicago Bears .

After a brief interlude with the Los Angeles Rams, where he temporarily replaced the injured Greg Zuerlein in October 2018 , the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him on November 12, 2018 for the previously sacked Chandler Catanzaro . After the Buccaneers selected kicker Matt Gay in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft , Santos was fired on August 31, 2019.

For the 2019 season , the Tennessee Titans signed him to replace the injured Ryan Succop . After he missed four field goals against the Buffalo Bills in Week 5 , he was fired by the Titans.

Personal

On September 15, 2013, Santo's father died in a plane crash in Brazil.
