Calatafimi Segesta or Calatafimi for short is a municipality in the free municipal consortium Trapani in the west of the Sicily region in Italy with 6459 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Calatafimi Segesta is located 35 km east of Trapani at an altitude of 338  m slm in the area of ​​the Freddo river . The ancient city of Segesta with a preserved temple and an ancient theater is located on the territory of the present municipality . The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and from the nearby quarries in which gypsum is extracted.

There is a train connection to Trapani from Calatafimi train station, which is outside the town. Travel time is around 30 to 45 minutes depending on the train.

The neighboring municipalities are Alcamo , Buseto Palizzolo , Castellammare del Golfo , Gibellina , Monreale ( PA ), Salemi , Santa Ninfa , Trapani and Vita .

history

The city was built around a Byzantine castle . The castle was strategically important and was rebuilt by the Arabs. In 1860 there was a decisive battle between Garibaldi's troops and the Bourbons . The island was conquered by Garibaldi. A memorial commemorates the Battle of Calatafimi . In 1968 the town's houses were badly damaged by an earthquake.

Attractions

The ancient city of Segesta with a well-preserved temple and theater is about 6 km northwest of the city. The castle from the 13th century is worth seeing and you have a beautiful view of the temple of Segesta. The Chiesa Madre church dates back to the 15th century, inside there is a marble altar from 1514.
