Calcium polysulphides are chemical compounds of calcium from the group of sulphides with the composition CaS x , with x between 2 and 7 and an average composition of CaS 5 .

Extraction and presentation

Calcium polysulphides are formed when a mixture of calcium oxide and sulfur is heated . By heating powdered, quick lime sulfur powder in a lot of water, the calcium polysulfide formed containing lime sulfur , which was made in 1852 by a French gardener named Grison first time.

It is also possible to display it by boiling calcium hydroxide with sulfur and water, whereby calcium polysulfide and calcium thiosulfate are formed first.

properties

Calcium polysulfide is a gray to orange solid with a sulfur-like odor.

use

Calcium polysulphides are used in the form of sulphurous lime broth as a spray. If you add diluted hydrochloric acid to a calcium polysulphide solution, a milky white suspension of finely divided sulfur in a dilute calcium chloride solution is created, which is used as sulfur milk against skin diseases, among other things.
