history

Rocca di Campigliola

The place is mentioned for the first time on April 18, 973 in a document of the Aldobrandeschi . From 1163 on, the Visconti di Campiglia were the masters of the place, closely linked to the local families of the Aldobrandeschi and the Ardengheschi. Under Pepone della Rocche (Pepone figlio di Tancredi Visconte di Campiglia) the place allied itself in the conflict over Montalcino with Siena , but then turned to the war opponents Florence and Orvieto , which led Siena to take the place in 1234. In 1425 the place finally fell to the Senese Republic. After the fall of the Senese Republic in 1555, the place fell to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . It was an independent place until 1777, when it became part of Abbadia San Salvatore . In 1867 Campiglia d'Orcia became part of Castiglione d'Orcia.
