Waddewarden is a district of the municipality of Wangerland in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony . The place lies between Jever and Hooksiel and has around 1000 inhabitants.

history

The place name can be traced back to the family name Wadda . The place was first mentioned in 1350 as Wadverden.

On July 1, 1972, Waddewarden was incorporated into the newly formed municipality of Wangerland on February 1, 1971.

It should not be confused with the Waddewarden of the same name near Tossens on the Butjadingen peninsula.

Attractions

As a landmark in the second half of the 13th century on a true mound built St. John's Church , a granite block-church of 40 meters in length. The free-standing bell tower was built at the end of the 15th century and bears three steel bells that were purchased in 1955 to replace the bronze bells that were delivered to be melted down during World War II .

In the immediate vicinity of the church there is a historical building To`n Schlagboom , which is currently used as a hotel. The building was first mentioned as a pub in 1772 and was also a quarter for travelers. The year 1770 can be read above the entrance portal. Before 1900 there was a turnpike in front of the house (hence the name), which the landlord only opened after paying a toll . The building was last extensively renovated in 2012.

The third important building in the ensemble of the church and the two inns is a little younger. The Waddewarder Hof , which is located directly opposite the To`n Schlagboom building , was built in 1850. It is currently used as a restaurant.

Only remnants of another sight can be seen today. In 1963, the Waddewarder Mühle was destroyed in a storm by lightning and the subsequent fire, except for the body. The remains are now integrated into a residential building.

Sons and daughters of the place

The parish of Waddewarden includes agricultural farms, such as the Canarienhausen farm (the striking name is derived from the name Knorring = Konring), where the agricultural and economic scientist Johann Heinrich von Thünen was born in 1783. On his Tellow estate in Mecklenburg, he worked out economic theories that became known worldwide ( see also: Thünensche Rings ).

His younger brother Friedrich von Thünen (1785–1865) took over the Canarienhausen farm and published writings on new cultivation methods, participated in the draft of the dike regulations from 1846, participated in the petition movement after 1830 and was a member of the preliminary parliament and the state parliament from 1848 to 1851 in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, member of the General Synod from 1849.

The scientist Johann Ludwig Tiarks (1789–1837) also came from Waddewarden . In 1832 he was accepted as a Fellow in the Royal Society . Further members of the Tjarks family were naturalized and gentryfied as important bankers (partners in the Schroders banking house ) in England in the 19th century .

Magister Braunsdorf, preacher in Waddewarden, enriched the early regional literature with a work that was essentially dated to 1797.
