history

As part of the silting of Harlebucht dammed Count Anton Günther on jeverschem area to 474 hectares in 1640 Garmser Groden one. At the point where the Sieltief flowed into the Vordeichsgelände, a Sielhafen was created , around which the Neugarmssiel Sielort developed in the Garmser Groden and outside dyke . The Vordeichs area was diked in 1698 and named Sophiengroden after Sophie von Sachsen-Weißenfels , wife of Prince Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst . At the same time Neugarmssiel lost its port function to Sophiensiel. The former sewer structure of Neugarmssiel has not been preserved.

According to Anton Günter's will, the part of Neugarmssiel that was occupied in Garmser Groden fell to the Aldenburg-Bentinck family with the Kniphausen rulership , while the Sophiengroden was under the Jever rulership. It was not until 1854 that the political division of the town was ended. At that time, the Grand Duke von den Bentincks acquired the Kniphausen estate including the Garmser Groden.

Since 1888 Neugarmssiel was connected to the railway network via the “Garms” railway station on the Jever – Harle railway line . For decades, goods for agriculture were handled in Garms and passenger transport was served. In 1968 the railway gave up the Garms stop. In the meantime, parts of the railway line have been converted into a cycle path.

Club life

The "Boßelverein Moot un Kraft Garms", which was founded in 1927 and was successful in many competitions, is known beyond regional borders.
