Cano is a municipality in Portugal and belongs to the district of Sousel , with an area of 49.4 km² and 1266 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 25.6 inh / km².
history
As in the rest of the district, finds prove a prehistoric settlement. Cano is the oldest town in Sousel County. It probably goes back to a place called Cannum by the Romans , which was characterized by the generous amount of water flowing through the place. Finds from a Roman cemetery prove the Roman settlement. Traces of buildings have also been found from the time of the Moorish settlement in the early 8th century.
King Manuel I gave the Vila von Cano its first town rights in 1512 and made it the seat of an independent district. After its dissolution in 1826 , Cano came to the Sousel district. The status of a vila (small town) was not withdrawn from the place.
Culture and sights
The landmark of the place is the Torre de Camões tower or also known as Torre de Álamo .
Other architectural monuments of Cano are stone fountains, ovens, mills, the mansion Casa Nobre no Cano , some public buildings and various sacred buildings , including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Cano (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça ), a Renaissance church with decorative elements of the Baroque .
economy
Traditionally, agriculture and the processing of agricultural goods are of great importance in the municipality. Olive oil , cork , charcoal and pork should be mentioned in particular , as well as the cultivation of tomatoes and other vegetables, and since the 1930s also cereals, especially wheat.
Tourism has grown in importance in recent years, especially hunting tourism and individual tourism in rural tourism .
