Carabao ( Thai คารา บา ว ) is a Thai rock band very popular in Thailand and other Asian countries. The group was founded in 1976 by the students Yuenyong Opakul (Aed) and Kirati Phromsaakhaa na Sakon Nakhon (Keo or Khiao), who met while studying in the Philippines . The word Carabao is Tagalog and means buffalo, a symbol of struggle, work hard and patience.

style

They are known for their "phleng phuea chiwit" ( เพลง เพื่อ ชีวิต ) or "songs for life". This type of music became popular with the protest songs of the 1970s political unrest in Thailand. Carabao have expanded the acoustic folk style of "phuea chiwit" with other forms of Thai music, western rock, hard rock, country and musical styles such as Latin and reggae . That is why they are also known as "Ethnic Rockers", "Kings of Cha-Cha-Cha " or "Rolling Stones of Asia".

The songs of Carabao deal with social and political issues, demands for social justice and the concerns of ordinary people. But there are also love songs and philosophical songs with messages for all people. Aed Carabao is loved by many. Despite his sharp tongue and open criticism of politicians, the economy and environmental degradation, he has long been successful. At least one or two songs from albums from the mid-90s have been banned by the government. The band was largely ignored by public television and radio stations at the time. Even so, Carabao is the most popular rock band in Thailand. Carabao has long since achieved cult status and is now one of the most successful legendary rock groups in the world. They are compared with U2.

history

Carabao has a long and varied history. There have been some changes. Several members have left the band and have returned. Bandleader, guitarist, lead singer, songwriter and composer Aed is the only member who has participated in all albums and tours.

Beginnings

Carabao was originally founded in the Philippines by Aed, Keo (Khiao) and one other member who all sang and played guitar. When Aed returned to Thailand, there were initially no more joint appearances. Aed initially worked as an architect and also continued to work as a musician. He wrote a song for the live band Hammer and played part-time with the band Hope . After gaining experience with other bands, he wanted to have his own band and Carabao was brought back to life. He convinced Keo (Khiao) to return and play bass from now on.

The first albums

The first album Lung Khi Mao ( ลุง ขี้ เมา - Drunk Old Man ) was released in 1981 by Aed and Keo. They were supported by members of Hope , as the young band lacked a drummer, a lead guitarist and a keyboardist. The album featured simple folk songs that were little different from other songs for life bands of the time, but there were influences from rock music. Some melodies were taken from Asian or Thai folk and rock songs. The theme song used the melody of a Filipino folk song. The album didn't sell often, but Aed found new members for a convincing live band.

The breakthrough came with the guitarist and singer Preecha Chanapai (Lek). Lek had a distinct and powerful style similar to Santana , which gave Aed more confidence in the band. At that time Lek was playing in The President Band . On Carabao’s second album, Aed, Lek and Keo were supported by members of this band. On this album Keo played guitar again and bassist Anupong Prathompatama (Ot) from the President Band played bass. Ot became one of the most loyal members of the band.

With their third album Carabao became known across the country. Waniphok ( วณิพก - The Wandering Musician ) with the title song of the same name tells the story of a blind street musician and became a big hit. This song is characterized by the "Sam Cha" rhythm, a mixture of northeastern Thai folk rhythms such as Mor Lam and Luk Thung as well as Latin rhythms. Later Carabao albums are characterized by many songs in this style. Aed noted with pride that pre-Waniphok discos in Thailand only played Western songs, but the song's catchy, down-to-earth rhythm enabled the breakthrough.

On the fourth album, the drummer Amnaat Luukjan (Pao) played with, who stayed with the band.

Fame

Carabao's most popular album Made In Thailand ( เมด อิน ไทย แลนด์ ) was created in 1984 and has been sold over four million times to date. The theme song was also successful in some neighboring countries. The album is characterized by a remarkable variety of musical styles: rock, folk, regional Thai styles such as Mor Lam and Luk Thung , reggae and Latin, as well as classical Thai music with the song เร ฟู จี (Refugee) .

At this time, two other musicians joined Carabao: Thanit Siiklindii (Ajaan) with woodwind instruments and guitarist / singer Thierry Mekwattana. Keo now became a background singer and multi-instrumentalist. The current line-up: Aed, Lek, Thierry, Keo, Ajaan, Ot and Pao is referred to by many fans as the classic line-up.

With this line-up, other albums were recorded in the 1980s. Powerful, unusually diverse and increasingly political works such as the hits Welcome to Thailand , Khon Chon Phuyingyai , Mae Sai and Thaplang were created . The latter is about the theft of an ancient door lintel (Thai: ทับหลัง - Thaplang ) from the Khmer temple Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung , which depicts the resting god Vishnu (Thai: พระ นารายณ์ - Phra Narai). He later turned up in an American museum, which sparked protests by the Thai government. Through the mediation of the Thai historian Prince Subhadradis Diskul , the work of art was returned in 1998. The chorus of the song translates as “Keep your Michael Jackson, but give us back our Vishnu!” During this time, Carabao cemented their reputation as Thailand's most popular music group of all time.

resolution

After the 1988 album Thaplang , the band began to break up as some members started solo careers. First went Thierry, Ajaan and Pao, who formed an offshoot of the band. After the tenth album Ham Chot Khwai ( ห้าม จอด ควาย ), the band announced their separation. But Aed, Lek and Ot soon played again with new musicians: Luechai Ngamsom (Duk) on keyboards and Chuchat Nuduang (Ko). At first the band had a different name, but Aed was persuaded to revive the name Carabao and so Carabao played with a new line-up. Aed was now the only founding member in the band. After the twelfth album Satcha Sip Prakan ( สัจจะ ๑๐ ประการ ) the fans experienced the next shock with the departure of Lek, who was replaced by the guitarist Khajornsak Hutawatana (Mi). Although fans weren't happy with the new line-up, three albums were made with this line-up in the early 1990s. Despite the lesser commercial success, Carabao remained one of the most important Thai bands. The singles Raeng Koi and Luang Pho Khun were often played on Thai radio stations.

reunion

In 1995 the band came together again in their classic line-up and celebrated the band's 15th anniversary. They recorded the double album Hak Huachai Yang Rak Khwai ( หาก หัวใจ ยัง รัก ควาย - If you still love buffalo ). This became the biggest success of the band for several years and so they became Thailand's biggest band again. But the reunification didn't last long. Then the line-up Aed-Ot-Duk-Mi-Ko played again, supported by Keo in the studio.

For their 18th album, Amerika Anthaphan , Lek and Thierry rejoined the band, which included 4 other members of the classical line-up (Aed, Lek, Thierry and Ot) as well as 3 later members (Duk, Ko, Mi) and as new members of the percussionist / flautist / drummer Thepajon Phanthuphongthai (Uan) and the second percussionist / bassist Sayaphon Singthong (Nong).

present

The band has recorded other albums that have enjoyed success both commercially and in the eyes of critics. The line-up remained largely stable. Only Nong left the band recently. Although Keo has not been an official member for years, he supports the albums with vocals, guitar and production assistance. Pao occasionally takes part in live performances. The last album of the band Yisip-Ha Phi Luk Lung Khi Mao ( 25 years - the child of the drunken old man ) was released in 2007 for their 25th anniversary. For the 80th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej , the song Tam Roy Pho ( Follow in the footsteps of the father ) appeared on this album , with which the band pays respect to the king.

Discography

To date, Carabao has recorded a total of 26 official studio albums - Vol. 1 to Vol. 26 / 1981–2009. Together with some special and live albums and the compilations, there are more than 60 releases.
