Karl August Raabe (born October 2, 1804 in Preßburg , Kingdom of Hungary ; † July 26, 1878 in Gmunden , Upper Austria ) was a Protestant theologian and first preacher of the German Evangelical Church Community AB in Preßburg .

Life

Karl August Raabe came from a German family and was the son of the Pressburg hat maker Daniel Raabe and his wife Magdalena nee. Kassberger. Between 1818 and 1823 he attended the Evangelical Lyceum in his hometown, having previously stayed in Raab for a year to learn the Hungarian language . Raabe began his theological studies in 1823 at the Evangelical Theological Academy ( Hungarian: 'Soproni Evangélikus Teologiai Akadémia' ) in Ödenburg . He continued his theology studies in Vienna from 1825 to complete it in the school year 1828/1829 at the University of Jena . In Jena he was taught by such important theologians as Baumgarten-Crusius , Johann Danz and Fries .

After his return to Hungary, Raabe was assigned as a ' chaplain ' ("parish assistant") to Pastor Matthäus Haubner in Raab. On January 20, 1830, he was the superintendent Kiss ordained . In the same year he was elected pastor in Modern , from where he followed a call to Schlaining (in Eisenburg County ) in 1833 . In 1843 Raabe came to the German community in Bösing and in 1843 as a pastor to the German Evangelical Church Community AB in Pressburg. Here he gave his inaugural sermon on July 9, 1843. Between the years 1861 and 1865 he was also the senior citizen of the parish.

Raabe married Marie von Dörner on November 15, 1831, the daughter of a businessman from Raabe. The marriage resulted in two sons and two daughters.

Raabe's later years were severely impaired by a severe hearing problem. Raabe died on July 26, 1878 in Gmunden in Upper Austria, where he was on a recovery cure. His remains were transferred to Pressburg and solemnly laid out in front of the altar of the Great German Evangelical Church. The Protestant and Catholic clergy and the prominent people of the city and the county of Pressburg took part in the funeral ceremonies . The obituary and church prayers were spoken by Bishop Ludwig Geduly. On August 1, 1878, the burial took place at the Pressburg Gaistor cemetery with great sympathy . The prayer at the open grave was spoken by Pastor Dörner from Bösing. At Raabe's express request, he was buried next to his brothers in office Wilhelm Josef Jarius († 1843) and Christian Tremmel († 1845).

Raabe was a gifted orator and an excellent preacher. He was a typical representative of the ' theological rationalism ' common in the 19th century .

Some of his sermons are in print, of which are considered particularly important:

  • Memory sermon for because. Franz II Emperor of Austria. Steinamanger 1835
  • Sermon for the introduction of the new hymnal. Pressburg 1845
  • Memory sermon for the Palatine Arch. Joseph . Pressburg 1847
  • Sermon on the festive commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Protestant congregation in Pressburg. Pressburg 1856
  • Sermon at the Reformation festival. Pressburg 1862
