Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Betz (born October 3, 1852 in Heilbronn ; † December 13, 1914 there ; also Karl Betz ) was a German businessman and politician ( DVP ). From 1895 until his death he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Württemberg Land estates .

Life

Betz was the son of the Heilbronn merchant and cigar manufacturer Carl Betz . After attending the Karlsgymnasium and the Realschule in Heilbronn, he did a business apprenticeship in his father's shop, during which he made numerous trips all over Germany. In 1873/1874 or 1874/1875 he did military service as a one-year volunteer with the 3rd Württemberg Infantry Regiment No. 121 and was released as a non-commissioned officer in the reserve with the qualification of officer . He then worked as a merchant in Heilbronn. Because of his liberal political views, he was removed from the list of officer aspirants in late 1878.

From the mid-1870s, Betz was active for the liberal Democratic People's Party and in 1878 worked closely with its Reichstag deputy Georg Härle from Heilbronn. He was friends with the old liberal and DVP founder Ludwig Pfau ; After Pfau's death, Betz gave a memorial address in Heilbronn in April 1894.

In 1895 he ran in the constituency of Heilbronn Stadt for the Chamber of Deputies of the Württemberg Land estates . In the runoff election on February 14, 1895, he was just able to prevail against the conservative Mayor of Heilbronn, Paul Hegelmaier . In the elections in 1900, 1906 and 1912 he ran in the same constituency and moved back into the Chamber of Deputies. In 1900 he won the runoff election against the Heilbronn factory owner Peter Bruckmann , who was non-party but ran for the national liberal German party . In 1906 he prevailed in the runoff election against the SPD candidate Franz Feuerstein , in 1912 he won in the first ballot, also against Feuerstein and two counting candidates. In the Chamber of Deputies, Betz belonged to various commissions (until 1910) or committees (from 1911), including the Constitutional Commission and the Economic Commission or the Economic Committee.

Betz was also active in local politics. From 1895 to 1896 he was a member of the Heilbronn Citizens' Committee , and from January 1895 until his death on the town council . From 1907 until his death he was also a member of the District Council of the Heilbronn District Office . In the Reichstag election in 1903 , he ran in the constituency of Württemberg III ( Heilbronn , Besigheim , Brackenheim , Neckarsulm ), but was eliminated in the first ballot. Theodor Wolff ( Bauernbund ) then won the runoff election against Gustav Kittler (SPD).

Betz was a founding member of several Heilbronn associations. In June 1879 he was a co-founder of the Heilbronner Rudergesellschaft Schwaben , of which he was chairman for several years. He was also co-founder and first chairman of 1894 founded the Association for cremation , in 1905 the first Württemberg crematorium on the Heilbronner main cemetery built, and put 1906 a pamphlet entitled The crematorium at the cemetery in Heilbronn a. N. before.

1906 Betz was the first chairman of the Heilbronner Masonic kränzchens fearless and faithful , from 1909 the same Masonic lodge of the Grand Mother Lodge of the Eclectic Masonic Federal emerged. Betz was also chairman of the German Peace Society in Heilbronn.

Honors

Karl-Betz-Strasse has existed in Heilbronn since June 10, 1948 . It was created by renaming Heinrich-Kleinbach-Strasse, which in turn was only created on September 25, 1947 by renaming Burgenlandstrasse, which was renamed on April 9, 1938 to commemorate the connection to Austria .
