Carl Braun Ritter von Fernwald

Carl Braun , from 1872 Braun Ritter von Fernwald (born March 22, 1822 in Zistersdorf (east of Vienna), Lower Austria; † March 28, 1891 in Vienna ; also Karl von Braun-Fernwald or Karl Ritter Braun von Fernwald ) was an Austrian obstetrician and gynecologist .

Life

Carl Braun was the son of a doctor and studied medicine at the University of Vienna from 1841 to 1846 . After graduating, Braun was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. From 1849 to 1853 he was Ignaz Semmelweis's successor as assistant to Johann Klein at the I. Obstetric University Clinic in Vienna. He completed his habilitation in 1853 and became a professor at the midwifery college in Trento .

In 1856 he became a full professor in Vienna and head of the First Obstetric University Clinic. In 1866/67 and 1870/71 he was dean and 1868/69 rector of the University of Vienna .

In 1877 he was appointed court counselor and in 1872 with the nobility title "von Fernwald" raised to knighthood .

In 1877 the Braungasse in Vienna- Hernals was named after him; In 1894 a portrait relief by Theodor Charlemont was unveiled in the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna .

Carl Braun Ritter von Fernwald is the grandfather of the opera singer Jella Braun-Fernwald .

Remarks

  1. According to the obituary , he died at the age of 69; the year of birth, often given as 1823 , is therefore incorrect.
