Carl August Devrient , actually Carl De Vrient , also Karl Devrient (born April 5, 1797 in Berlin , † August 3, 1872 in Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains ) was a German theater actor .

Life

Devrient was the eldest son of the Berlin silk merchant Tobias Philipp De Vrient . His father envisaged a commercial career for him as for his brothers Eduard Devrient and Gustav Emil Devrient . The actor Ludwig Devrient was his uncle.

After attending the Gray Monastery High School , Devrient volunteered in Colomb's hussar regiment . He fought in 1815 the age of seventeen in the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon's troops. Devrient took over a business from another uncle in Zwickau in 1817 and worked temporarily in Berlin . With the help of his uncle he got his first engagement in Braunschweig , on July 28, 1819 Devrient made his debut in Friedrich Schiller's “Wilhelm Tell”. His career took him from Braunschweig to Dresden . Here Devrient married the then eighteen-year-old opera singer Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient in 1823 . His son Friedrich was born in Dresden in 1827, and Devrient often played with him. In 1828 he divorced Wilhelmine; but they continued to work together until 1834.

Further stations in Devrient's career were Paris , Karlsruhe and in 1839 Hanover . Here the hero actor worked for 33 years at the court theater. At the beginning of his career he played youthful heroes and lovers, later character roles such as King Lear or Wallenstein .

Devrient was accepted into the Freemasons ' Union in 1844 in the Zur Ceder Lodge in Hanover .

In 1855 he married the singer and actress Johanna Block. From this marriage comes his son Max Devrient , who also became an actor.

According to the address book of the royal capital and residence city of Hanover, the court actor was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor for Art and Science in 1866 .

In 1869 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Hanover. Devrient died in 1872 during a spa stay in Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains.
