Carl Friedrich Christian Graf zu Castell-Castell (* December 8, 1801 at Castell Castle near Würzburg , Lower Franconia , Bavaria ; † March 2, 1850 in Wiesbaden , Hesse ) was co-founder, vice-president and managing director of the " Mainzer Adelsverein " and a ducal colonel in Nassau War Department .

family

He came from the old Franconian knight and noble family of Castell and was the youngest child of Friedrich Karl Graf zu Castell-Castell (1766-1810), Lord of Castell, and Princess Sophie Charlotte zu Loewenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg (1771-1823).

Count Castell married on July 18, 1837 in Zaro ( Dalmatia , Croatia ) Sylvine Countess Vetter von Lilienberg (* March 4, 1810, † July 10, 1872 in Wiesbaden, Hesse), the daughter of Count Wenzel Vetter von Lilienberg and the Countess of Therese from Daun.

Life

After private lessons at Schloss Castell and military training in the Royal Bavarian Cadet - Corps , Castell joined in 1819 as a cornet in a Hanoverian Hussar - Regiment . In 1833 he left the Hanoverian army with the rank of major and joined the Imperial Austrian army.

In 1821 Castell was as Cornet, d. H. Ensign , stationed in the 4th Squadron of the 3rd Hussar Regiment of the Hanoverian Army in the Göttingen area. That year he entered into an illegitimate relationship with the miller's daughter Wilhelmine Luise Müller in Lödingsen. This resulted in an illegitimate child: Dorothea Charlotte Wilhelmine Christine (* March 22, 1822 in Lödingsen; ~ March 24, 1822 ibid.). This daughter was confirmed with the family name Castell in 1836 in Lödingsen. She married Justus Friedrich August Busch from Barterode in Lödingsen on May 13, 1849.

For the next six years he was stationed in Moravia , Hungary , Dalmatia and Vienna . In 1841 he was appointed Austrian government adjutant at Mainz fortress with the rank of captain .

Animated by various books about Texas and by the Texan struggle for independence, on April 20, 1842, he was not only one of the founders of the “ Mainz Adelsverein ” in Biebrich near Wiesbaden , but was also elected Vice President and Managing Director. Under his leadership, the “Adelsverein” was converted into a stock corporation in March 1844 .

But in the mid-1840s, the association got into great financial hardship, which was not least due to Castell himself, who had a great interest in the colonization of the state of Texas, but was not financially skilled. In 1847 he resigned as managing director and August Freiherr von Bibra took over the fortunes of the “Adelsverein” .

As early as 1846, Castell had succeeded Joseph Graf von Boos zu Waldeck as adjutant and stable master of Duke Adolph von Nassau , who was also the patron of the “noble club”.

At the beginning of 1850 he had just been promoted to colonel in the Ducal Nassau Army and was appointed head of department in the Nassau War Department when he died of liver failure on March 2 .

The town of Castell (Texas) in Llano County on the border with Mason County , which was originally founded by German emigrants on the north bank of the Llano River, but is now located on the south bank, was named after him.
