Carl Cori (* 24. February 1865 in Brüx , Empire of Austria ; † 31 August 1954 in Vienna ) was an Austrian zoologist and university teachers .

Life

Cori his doctorate in 1889 at the University of Leipzig to Dr. phil. and in 1891 at the Karl Ferdinand University as Dr. med. In 1892 he completed his habilitation with Berthold Hatschek in Prague. His field of work was the comparative anatomy of invertebrates , especially calyx and horseshoe worms .

As associate professor , he headed the Imperial and Royal Zoological Station in Trieste from 1898 , which he brought to international renown through marine biological research on the Adriatic . Appointed full professor in 1908, he taught again in Prague from 1919 to 1935 after the end of the Habsburg monarchy and the establishment of Czechoslovakia . In 1925/26, 1927/28 and 1930/31 he was rector of the German Karl Ferdinand University. In 1932 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

family

The Cori came late 17th century from the Papal States to Bohemia. Cori's father Eduard Cori (1812–1889) was an administrative officer and beekeeper in Brüx. The mother Rosina b. Trinks died in 1909. Cori's son Carl Ferdinand Cori received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1947 . The daughter Margarete Cori (* 1905) was an editor in Prague and married the geneticist Felix Mainx (1900–1983).
