Carl Ludwig Althans (born December 15, 1788 in Bückeburg , † September 10 or October 10, 1864 in Sayn ) was a Prussian mining official and head of the royal Prussian ironworks in Sayn .

Life

Carl Ludwig Althans was born in Bückeburg in 1788 as the son of the baker Albrecht Wolfgang Althans . He first learned his father's craft, but his technical talent led him to quit the craft at the age of 16 and do another apprenticeship in a steel goods factory. He then learned and worked for various employers and deepened his mathematical and technical knowledge. At the age of 22, a grant from Prince Georg Wilhelm von Schaumburg-Lippe enabled him to attend the University of Göttingen . There he studied mathematics , mechanics, and construction and mining . After completing his studies, he became a construction manager in the civil service of the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe . The position as national construction officer, Mr gratified but not his ambition and so he joined in 1817 in the Prussian civil service and structured for the Mining Office in Bonn, the local government and mining smelters new. His success in doing this enabled him to have a steep career: in 1829 he was appointed Oberhütten-Bauinspektor, in 1844 he was appointed Oberhütten- und Bauinat and on his retirement in 1862 he was appointed secret mountain ridge . He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . His responsibility extended to all iron and steel works in the Prussian Rhine province and part of the iron and steel works in the province of Westphalia . In the Sayner Hütte in particular, important evidence of his work has been preserved; the foundry hall , which was built entirely in cast iron in 1825 , is now a listed building .

Althans died in Sayn in 1864 at the age of 76.

family

He was married twice. His first wife was Johanne Seebohm (1790–1819). After her death he married Charlotte Schenck (1794–1870). He had two children: his son Ernst Friedrich Althans (1828–1899) followed in his footsteps as a Prussian mountain official and Oberbergrat. The daughter Alwine married Wilhelm Hauchecorne , the founding president of the Prussian State Geological Institute , in 1855 . His grandson Richard Althans (1862-1939) became chief miner and ministerial director in the Prussian mining administration.
