Carl von Bassewitz-Levetzow

Carl Heinrich Ludwig Graf von Bassewitz-Levetzow (born March 3, 1855 in Schwerin , † February 23, 1921 in Bristow ) was President of the State Ministry of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

origin

Carl von Bassewitz-Levetzow came from the counts of the Bassewitz family , who belonged to the Mecklenburg nobility . His parents were Carl Graf von Bassewitz (born February 16, 1821; † May 5, 1873) and Ina von Bülow (born January 12, 1827; † October 5, 1900), a daughter of Court Marshal Jaspar Friedrich von Bülow . In 1861 his father inherited the majorat Kläden mit Pertinenzien from his uncle Alexander von Levetzow , which led to the association of names and coats of arms of Bassewitz-Levetzow .

Life

After finishing high school in Stendal and at the Johann Heinrich Voss School in Eutin , Carl studied at the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg . In 1875 he became active in the Corps Saxo-Borussia Heidelberg . After three semesters he joined the 1st Guard Dragoon Regiment "Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland" in Berlin. He left it in 1879 while joining the reserve officers .

After several months of traveling through Egypt , Palestine and Turkey , documented in letters to his mother , he returned in 1880 to manage his Mecklenburg estates, Bristow, Glasow, Grube and Tessenow. Later he was also entrant commissioner of the Altmark estates of Kläden and Darnewitz in the Stendal district . Between 1887 and 1899 he also took over the management of the Prebberede , Jahmen, Grieve, Wesselstorf and Drüsewitz estates for the ten orphaned children of his cousin Henning Graf von Bassewitz (Prebberede) . In 1892 he was appointed chamberlain for Mecklenburg-Schwerin . In 1893 he was a deputy of the Mecklenburg knighthood in the state parliament. In 1899 he became district administrator in the Duchy of Güstrow . In 1901 Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV appointed him Minister of State. He also held the post of Minister for Foreign Affairs. He held both offices until 1914.

family

With his wife Margarete, née Countess von der Schulenburg (1864–1940), he had five children, including Werner Graf von Bassewitz-Levetzow and Ina Marie (1888–1873), who lived with Prince Oskar von Prussia (the fifth child of Wilhelm II. ), Was married.

His sister Ina Countess von Bassewitz (1850-1940) was a deaconess and (since 1891) superior of the Bethlehem Abbey in Ludwigslust . The MP Bernhard von Bassewitz-Levetzow was his brother.
