Carl von Heß (physician)
Carl Ludwig Adolf Heß , from 1912 Ritter von Heß , (* March 7, 1863 in Mainz , † June 28, 1923 in Possenhofen ) was a German ophthalmologist in Marburg, Würzburg and Munich.
Life
As the son of the Mainz ophthalmologist Wilhelm Heß, Carl Heß studied medicine at the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität Strasbourg , the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . On May 25 and 26, 1886, he was approved as a doctor in Heidelberg and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. He completed his specialist training as an ophthalmologist with Hubert Sattler (Leipzig), Ewald Hering (Prague) and Heinrich Leopold Schoeler (Berlin). He completed his habilitation in 1891 at the Leipzig ophthalmological institution. The University of Leipzig appointed him an associate professor on December 9, 1895 .
The Philipps University of Marburg appointed him in 1896 as full professor and director of the eye clinic. The medical faculty elected him dean in 1900 . On August 1, 1900, he changed to the chair of Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg as the successor to Julius von Michel . In this capacity, Hess became a Privy Councilor in 1907 and received the Cross of Honor of the Order of Merit from Saint Michael in 1910 . Prince Regent Ludwig III thanked him for rejecting calls to Strasbourg, Vienna, Heidelberg and Berlin . 1912 by being awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . Associated with this was the elevation to the personal nobility and he was allowed to call himself "Ritter von Hess" after being entered in the nobility register . In the same year, Heß moved to the Munich chair. The color perception was life at the center of his research. He died of pernicious anemia . He found his final resting place in the forest cemetery (Munich) . With his student Karl Wessely , he was considered the most important ophthalmologist in Germany.
