From 1965 to 1969 she was in the opera ensemble of the Saarbrücken City Theater (now the Saarland State Theater ), where she a. a. Elsa in Lohengrin , Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier , Desdemona in Othello , Arabella and all Brünnhilden in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen sang.

In 1987 she sang Brünnhilde in the Japanese premiere of the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen in Yokohama and Tokyo , directed by Götz Friedrich , with the conductor Jesus Lopez-Cobos .

For Catarina Ligendza, the ensemble theater is a prerequisite for the positive development of an opera singer, which is why for her the work in the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the State Opera Stuttgart was more important than extensive concert and guest tours.

Catarina Ligendza was a singing actress, for her the acting embodiment of a role was just as important as the vocal performance. She found opera recordings in the studio to be unsatisfactory because there was no stage activity, so she hardly ever recorded any operas on vinyl. One of the exceptions is a recording of the Meistersinger von Nürnberg from 1976, in which she sang the part of Eva and which was conducted by Eugen Jochum .

However, she took part in several opera films: as Senta in the film adaptation of the Flying Dutchman with the director Václav Kašlík and with Wolfgang Sawallisch as conductor. As Elsa in a live broadcast on television from the Bavarian State Opera, in the Lohengrin production by August Everding with Ernst Fuchs as stage designer and the conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch. As Agathe im Freischütz in a production of the Stuttgart State Opera, directed by Achim Freyer and the conductor Dennis Russell Davies , as well as the Chrysothemis in Elektra in a production by Unitel, directed by Götz Friedrich , with the conductor Karl Böhm .

Catarina Ligendza has a. a. with conductors such as Carlos Kleiber , Herbert von Karajan , Daniel Barenboim , Lorin Maazel , Michael Gielen , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Otmar Suitner , Karl Böhm , Eugen Jochum and Horst Stein , as well as the directors Achim Freyer , Götz Friedrich , Herbert Wernicke , Ruth Berghaus , Jean -Pierre Ponnelle , Kurt Horres , Wolfgang Wagner , August Everding .
