Celio Piccolomini (* 1609 in Siena ; † May 24, 1681 there ) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop of Siena.

biography

Celio Piccolomini was born in Siena in 1609 as the eldest child of Alessandro Piccolomini and Lucreazia Ugurgieri.

After completing his studies, he moved to Rome and initially practiced as a lawyer. Under Pope Urban VIII he was appointed auditor at the Apostolic Chamber . Under the patronage of Cardinal Alessandro Bichi , he received various offices in the Curia and was sent as a delegate to the King of France to inform him about the status of the peace treaty of Italy. This was followed by offices as the secret chamberlain of Pope Alexander VII and canon in St. Peter's Basilica .

On October 16, 1656 he was elected titular archbishop of Cesarea . His consecration took place on October 29, 1656 in the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano by Cardinal Giulio Cesare Sacchetti .

First he was sent to France as extraordinary nuncio to promote peace negotiations with Spain and to support Hungary in the war with the Turks. On October 27, 1663 he was appointed nuncio of France and held this office until August 1663. Piccolomini was abruptly recalled by the French embassy in September 1662 and initially went to Chambery . This happened because of an incident between the family of the French ambassador in Rome and Corsican soldiers on August 20, 1662, in which there were some wounded and the duke's servant was killed.

His appointment as cardinal priest in the consistory took place on January 14, 1664. The consecration took place on February 11, 1664 and received the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio . On March 18, 1671, he was transferred as Archbishop of Siena.

Piccolomini participated in the conclave of 1667 that Pope Clement IX. elected, from 1669-1670 , the Pope Clement X. elected, and from 1676 part, the Pope Innocent XI. chose.

Celio Piccolomini died in Siena on May 24, 1681. He was buried in the Cathedral of Siena in front of the altar of Saint Catherine of Siena , in the crypt of the Avveduti family.
