The Century class is a series of three Panamax cruise ships that were commissioned by the Celebrity Cruises shipping company from Meyer Werft in Papenburg and put into service between 1995 and 1997. A characteristic feature of the Century class is the strict lines with the steeply sloping, straight forward stem .

history

In March 1993 the American shipping company Celebrity Cruises ordered a new Panamax cruise ship with the option of two more identical newbuildings from Meyer Werft in Papenburg. The interior furnishings of the ships were designed by the naval architects Jon Bannenberg and John McNeece. The type ship with the hull number S.637 was laid down on October 2, 1994, delivered in November 1995 and put into service in December of the same year under the Liberian flag . At the time of delivery, the Century was one of the most expensive cruise ships in the world with a price of around US $ 320 million.

The keel of the second ship with hull number S.638 was laid on May 25, 1995. In order to increase the passenger capacity and enable further on-board facilities, the hull was lengthened by about 15 meters. The ship was delivered in November 1996 and entered service under the name Galaxy on December 21, 1996 after being transferred to Miami .

The third ship of the Century -class, the later Mercury , is almost identical to the Galaxy . She was laid down on September 6, 1994 under the hull number S.639 and delivered on October 15, 1997.

Modernization and renovation measures

The Century -class ships were modernized several times during their service life. In spring 2006, the Celebrity Century was converted by the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri in Palermo for around US $ 55 million. Among other things, 314 cabins were equipped with balconies . In order to ensure the stability of the ship, a steel substructure - a so-called ducktail - was drawn in in the stern .

With the handover of the Celebrity Galaxy to TUI Cruises in March 2009, the other two ships also underwent extensive renovation work. For the Celebrity Galaxy , which later became Mein Schiff , and for the Celebrity Mercury , which later became Mein Schiff 2 , 200 balconies were added in the dry dock of the Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven and 202 balconies were extended and made into verandas . The interior areas were redesigned and the ships were given the dark blue color scheme and characteristic lettering. Due to the additional weight, the structure had to be adjusted and the stern had to be extended to compensate for a 300-tonne ducktail. The work on the Mein Schiff was completed on May 4, 2009. The almost identical renovation work on the later Mein Schiff 2 began on March 14, 2011 and was completed on April 20, 2011.

commitment

Celebrity Cruises operated the Century- class ships designed for worldwide use on the American east coast and in the Caribbean, among others . Since the ships can pass the Panama Canal , they were also used on the American west coast as far as Alaska and in the Pacific as far as East Asia and Oceania .

TUI Cruises operates Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 in the classic cruise areas of Europe ( Mediterranean , Canary Islands , North and Baltic Seas ) as well as in the Caribbean and the Persian Gulf .

In December 2013, the French Royal Caribbean subsidiary Croisières de France (CDF) confirmed the access to Celebrity Century . Celebrity Cruises only announced that the ship would leave its own fleet at the end of 2015. At the beginning of December 2014 it was announced that the Celebrity Century would not be transferred to CDF, but as the first ship to Skysea Cruises, a newly established joint venture between the Chinese tour operator Ctrip and Royal Caribbean International. Ctrip had already announced the takeover of the ship at the end of April 2015 in September 2014.

Machine system and drive

The ships of the Century class are each equipped with two conventionally constructed diesel-mechanical propulsion systems. Each system consists of an engine group consisting of a nine-cylinder ("father") and a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine ("son") of the MAN 48 / 60B type. These rotate at 500 rpm and are connected in pairs via clutches of the "Vulkan-Rato" type to a spur gear unit manufactured by Renk . Each drive group acts via a propeller shaft (diameter: 614 mm) on a 4-blade controllable pitch propeller with a diameter of 5.80 m. In order to minimize vibrations and noise, the motors and gears are floating. Depending on the respective requirements (speed, weather conditions), the ship can be operated in different drive configurations.

In normal operation, power is supplied by four separate generators, which are driven by 6-cylinder MAN 40/54 diesel engines with an output of 4,320 kW (approx. 5,875 hp) each and are housed in a separate machine room. If these units are not available, two shaft generators that are flanged to the main gears can provide an electrical output of around 5,200 kVA each. If necessary, these generators can also be used as additional drive machines and coupled to the diesel engines.

The ship is controlled via two active rudders. As a maneuvering aid, three transverse thrusters are installed in the bow and two in the stern . Each system has an output of 1,400 kW (approximately 1,900 hp). Together with the active rudders that can be controlled via joysticks, the ships can be maneuvered comfortably even without tug assistance. To damp rolling motions, a pair of Blohm & Voss - stabilizers installed. Each fin is around 6 m long and has an effective area of 15 m².
