Charles E. Flower

Charles Edwin Flower (* 1871 in Merton , Surrey , † 1951 in Wallingford (Oxfordshire) ) was an English painter, printmaker and illustrator .

Flower studied painting at the Royal College of Art in London . After his wedding in Croydon to the ten years older sculptor Alice Berta D. Perry (born June 1, 1860 in Croydon, Surrey; † unknown), daughter of George Perry and Amelia Norris , the couple initially lived in Balham (London) , later in Anerley near London, where son Edwin was born.

From 1890 to 1894 he worked in Rushmore ( Wiltshire ) for an annual salary of 72 pounds sterling as an assistant to the ethnologist and archaeologist Augustus Pitt Rivers (1827–1900) and illustrated his first collection catalogs. In September 1895 Flower showed his painting " Gold Hill, Shaftesbury " at an exhibition in Larmer Tree Gardens, Wiltshire.

In 1899 Flower exhibited some of his works in an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts . In 1902 he made a study trip of several years to the American continent and visited New York City , Toronto , Ottawa , Montreal , Québec , Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro . From 1906 he traveled through Europe and stayed mainly in Germany . Numerous postcard motifs date from this time .

Together with Henry B. Wimbush (1858–1943) he worked for the London postcard publisher Raphael Tuck & Sons for almost four decades . Flower's motifs from his travels were mainly sold in large numbers in his postcard series " Oilette " (small versions of oil paintings), which has been published since 1903 .

In 1907 Flower moved with his family to Wallingford (Oxfordshire), where he lived until his death (1951) and worked for the London postcard publisher Raphael Tuck & Sons.

Some of his paintings are now in the British Museum .
