Charles Kittel (born July 18, 1916 in New York - † May 15, 2019 ) was an American physicist . He was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley from 1951 and retired from 1978 .

life and work

Charles Kittel studied at Cambridge University , England , from which he graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He wrote his dissertation in nuclear physics in 1941 at the University of Wisconsin with Gregory Breit . During the Second World War he was at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington, DC from 1940 to 1942 and then headed the Submarine Operations Research Group (SORG) of the Operations Research Group of the US Navy. Then Kittel researched from 1945 to 1947 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and from 1947 to 1951 at Bell Laboratories , New Jersey , where he dealt specifically with the subject of ferromagnetism . In 1949 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

In 1951 he was appointed to the University of California, Berkeley, and held his teaching post until his retirement in 1978. There he taught and researched in the field of solid state physics . Kittel is known for his textbook on solid state physics .

The RKKY interaction is named after him, Malvin Ruderman (his co-author in this field) and two others .

Charles Kittel had been married to Muriel A. Lister since 1938 and had three children.
