Charles David Copeland "Charlie" Miller (born March 18, 1976 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player. At the start of his career he was considered one of the greatest Scottish talents, but persistent fitness problems and an unprofessional lifestyle prevented a more successful career. His club stations led across Scotland, England, Norway and Belgium to Australia.

Club career

Miller joined the senior squad for the Glasgow Rangers in 1992 and made his first appearances the following season. In the club's most successful phase, which won the Scottish Championship nine times in a row between 1989 and 1997, Miller came in the seasons 1994/95 and 1995/96, in a team with seasoned midfielders such as Brian Laudrup , Ian Durrant , Stuart McCall , Ian Ferguson and Trevor Steven , regularly on missions. His achievements in the 1994/95 season led to the award of "Young Player of the Year" by the Professional Footballers' Association Scotland . With the Rangers he won four championship titles between 1993 and 1997, the FA Cup and the League Cup .

An unprofessional lifestyle, which he adapted from his friend and mentor Paul Gascoigne , led to a stagnation in his development in the following years and finally in 1999 under coach Dick Advocaat to his sale for 450,000 pounds to the English club Watford FC . The transfer turned out to be a flop for Watford, Miller only made 14 league appearances due to persistent fitness problems until his contract was terminated in November 2000; Watford FC descended from the Premier League during this time . Afterwards Miller returned to Scotland and played from then on for Dundee United , mostly in the lower table region of the Scottish Premier League . When he had not come to an agreement with the club on the modalities of a new contract in 2004, he left Dundee and moved to the Norwegian first division club Brann Bergen .

With Brann Bergen he won the Norwegian Club Cup in 2004, the club's first title in 22 years, but always had to struggle with fitness problems here as well. After Martin Andresen's commitment in 2005, the central midfield position was now mostly occupied, instead Miller was often used in the right midfield, a position that the Scotsman did not particularly like. After he had refused to take part in the awarding of the silver medals after the runner-up in 2006, he fell out of favor with coach Mons Ivar Mjelde and his contract was canceled during the season break. Miller then continued his career at the Belgian first division club Lierse SK , but rose with the club at the end of the 2006/07 season in the second division. He left the club after another season in 2008.

Miller in the jersey of the Roar (2008)

After rumors of a return to Scotland had initially made the rounds, he moved to the Australian A-League club Queensland Roar in early August 2008 . His move to Queensland was initially compared in the Australian media with the previous year's commitment of Mário Jardel , who was more noticeable for his overweight and poor fitness than for his athletic performance in the A-League . Miller countered this criticism with four goals in the first four league games and moved into the play-offs with the club. At the end of the season he was honored as the best foreign player with the first ever A-League Foreign Player of the Year award.

In early December 2009, his contract with the now renamed Brisbane Roar club was dissolved after the new coach Ange Postecoglou had no longer planned for the coming season with Miller. A week later, he signed a short-term contract with league rivals Gold Coast United to replace the injured Robson . After the season there was no contract extension at Gold Coast United. It was only in February 2011 that he joined a new club, the then bottom of the Scottish Football League Third Division FC Clyde . At the end of the season, after only five appearances, he was no longer signed up with twelve other players.

National team

Miller came to his only appearance for the Scottish senior team in a friendly against Poland on April 25, 2001. Under national coach Craig Brown , who already coached Miller in the Scottish U-21 selection , Barry Nicholson , Gavin also made his debut in this game Rae and John O'Neil . Miller was not considered under Brown's successor Berti Vogts .
