Martin Andresen (born February 2, 1977 in Kråkstad ) is a former Norwegian football player and today's coach . He is currently under contract in Norway with Vålerenga Oslo .

He is considered one of the most outstanding players in Norway for the last ten years. From 2004 to 2008 he was the captain of the Norwegian national soccer team . In 2003 he was the first Stabæk Fotball player and only the second non-legionnaire to be voted Footballer of the Year in Norway.

Club career

Career start

Andresen began his career at the age of nine in the youth of his home club Ski IL. There he was discovered early by the Norwegian federation and made his debut in the Norwegian U-15 national team at the age of 14.

In 1995 he received his first professional contract with Moss FK . In his first season he became champions of the 1st division with Molde and was promoted to the Tippeligaen . In the following season, the unfortunate immediate relegation followed with the club as third from bottom. Andresen was the most noticeable Moss player and became the club's second-best goalscorer with 6 goals this season.

As a result, he signed for a year with the then sensational team Viking Stavanger . Stavanger, which disappeared into insignificance behind Rosenborg Trondheim after the championship title in 1991 , played for the title for a long time and, alongside Brann Bergen, was one of the teams that were trusted to end the supremacy of Rosenborg. But it turned out differently. Stavanger had no impact on the offensive due to the previous sale of Egil Østenstad and was only a disappointing 8th. Andresen was again the most conspicuous player and ended the season with 8 goals this season as the club's top scorer.

In 1998 he followed the call of coach Hans Backe , who described Andresen as his absolute dream player and moved to Stabæk Fotball within the league . In Stabæk he became one of the strongest players in the Tippeligaen and won a title in his first year by winning the cup. In total, he completed 54 games in two seasons in which he scored 16 goals. Together with Tobias Linderoth and Tommy Svindal Larsen , he formed the strongest midfield in Norway at that time, which attracted the interest of various international clubs.

Flop at Wimbledon

As the first of the trio, Andresen then moved to Wimbledon FC in the English Premier League for the record transfer fee of around three million euros .

Under coach and compatriot Egil Olsen , he also made appearances at Wimbledon without being as convincing as before in Stabæk. When Olsen was dismissed for unsuccessful Wimbledon and replaced by Terry Burton, he was no longer used by the Londoners. In order to avoid a fate on the bank, he then let himself be loaned back to Molde FK for three months .

However, he could not completely convince even at Molde and only scored 1 goal in 9 season appearances. He then returned to Wimbledon that was relegated to Division One during his loan period. In order to save his salary, he was then allowed to move back to Stabæk free of charge.

Stabæk superstar

Back in Stabæk, he then played stronger than ever before. With Andresen you always got a place in the top 5 of the league and in the meantime played extremely spectacular football by Norwegian standards. In 2002, Andresen was appointed team captain. In the 2003 season he became the outstanding man in the Norwegian league. After Linderoth left to FC Everton and Svindal-Larsen to 1. FC Nürnberg , Stabæk only had one well-known player in the team with Christian Wilhelmsson and was traded as a relegation candidate. But Andresen surpassed himself and kept the team in the title fight with outstanding performances for almost the entire season. At the end of the season they finished 3rd in the table and Andresen received two Kniksenprisen for the best midfielder in Norway and the award for player of the year .

Injury bad luck in Blackburn

Several contract offers from various foreign clubs followed, but failed due to Stabæk's high transfer demand. However, since Andresen wanted to try again abroad, the club then agreed with the Blackburn Rovers about a change on loan. In one of Blackburn manager Graeme Souness , inflated by countless transfers Blackburn squad, he was again immediately a regular place and played a solid part in midfield of the Rovers until the end of the 2003/04 season. For the 2004/05 season he was seriously injured for the first time in his career and missed the entire preparation of the club. Mark Hughes , who in the meantime had taken over the post of unsuccessful Souness, tried to detoxify the bloated squad and to rebuild it according to his ideas. As a result, the convalescent Andresen was sent back to Stabæk.

Descent with Stabæk

Stabæk was meanwhile after the departures of Wilhelmsson and Andresen in the relegation battle of the league. The club urgently needed a leader who would save the team from relegation. All hopes now rested on the "prodigal son" who had returned to salvation. But Andresen was still not fit and dragged the injury from the Blackburn days with him. Despite the injury not healed, he played 13 games for Stabæk, but without being able to prevent relegation. Andresen then announced that he did not want to play in the second division, whereupon the club gave its consent for contract negotiations. Since Stabæk once again demanded a horrific transfer fee for the new national team captain, the move was problematic. After the financially most potent Norwegian club Rosenborg had dropped out, the negotiations only took place between Vålerenga Oslo and Brann Bergen .

Master with Brann Bergen

On December 23, 2004, Brann Bergen announced the commitment of Andresen for the club record sum of around € 2 million. What followed was a disappointing first season in which he was slowed down by countless injuries. At the end of the season Brann only took the disappointing 6th place in the table, which brought Andresen in particular into criticism due to the financial effort that the club had made in the transfer phase. The Norwegian press caused further excitement when they reported that Andresen, as captain of the national team, also wanted to wear the armband in the club. This caused disagreements between him and the Brann captain, Cato Guntveit , who was extremely popular in Bergen at the time . After a serious injury to Guntveits, which forced him to watch the entire 2006 season, the controversy resolved itself. Andresen was named captain by Brann coach Mons Ivar Mjelde.

The critics also fell silent when Andresen was able to stabilize his form in the season and led the team to the runner-up title.

In 2007 the final triumph followed with winning the championship title, which was also the first championship for Brann since 1963. Andresen was once again the outstanding man in midfield, which also earned him a team of the year nomination. In the election for Player of the Year, however , he had to admit defeat by John Carew and his great successor at Stabæk Alanzinho .

Player-coach in Oslo

Andresen as player-coach for Vålerenga

The following season he signed a three-year contract as a player-coach with Vålerenga Oslo . So, with a three-year delay, Andresen was signed. In Oslo he has since taken on the role of team coach and full-time player. His team also includes 5 other trainers for individual areas. In his first season he was able to celebrate a title win in a thrilling cup final, which of all things was won 4: 1 against Andresen's former club Stabæk Fotball, which consoled a rather disappointing final rank of 10. As a player he made 23 appearances this season with one goal. In the 2009 season he was only able to complete 17 season assignments due to a hemorrhoid problem. Vålerenga is out of the title race and is in a secure midfield.

National team

Andresen was already used in the U-15 selection of his country. This was followed by conscription to all youth teams in Norway. From 1997 he was the captain of the Norwegian U-21 national team .

On August 15, 2001, he made his debut in a friendly against Turkey for the Norwegian national football team . He then ran in the remaining qualifying games for the 2004 European Football Championship in Greece , for which Norway, however, could not qualify.

When he threatened to lose his place in the Norwegian tribe during his time at Blackburn, he found a great advocate in John Carew . Carew campaigned for the retention of Andresens as a regular player, even if he was only used sporadically at Blackburn. Then Andresen confirmed his importance for the team and scored the winning goal in the 1-0 win against Serbia & Montenegro in Belgrade. Coach Åge Hareide surprised before the game when he put him on for the first time. A month later he also scored a goal in a memorable 3-2 win against Russia , which finally substantiated his claim to leadership.

As a result, before qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, coach Åge Hareide made him the official captain of the national team. He had previously shared this role with the former regular captain Claus Lundekvam . As a result, he led the team in 7 missions as captain in the qualification, where they could reach 2nd place in the table behind Italy and thus the Barrage games. In these two unlucky defeats with 1-0 against the Czech Republic and thus missed the qualification. Andresen was unable to play in both qualifying games due to injury.

This was followed by qualification for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland . For a long time it looked like the team would qualify in this group before they lost in the decisive game against co-favorites Turkey . Andresen had previously played 10 qualifying games for Norway before he was again injured in a crucial game. Norway was only third behind European champions Greece and Turkey and could not qualify. Thus Andresen was denied participation in a major soccer tournament with Norway.

When his illness became acute at the end of 2008 and he was unable to play a number of international matches, he passed on his captaincy to Fulham legionnaire Brede Hangeland .

To date (October 2009) he has completed 43 international matches for Norway, in which he scored 3 goals. Andresen is the owner of the "Golden Clock", which is awarded to every Norwegian national player who has completed more than 25 senior team appearances.
