Charlotte Fera

Charlotte Fera (born October 24, 1905 in Bremen ; † May 10, 1998 in Hamburg ) was a Hamburg politician ( CDU ).

Fera was born as the daughter of the businessman Hinrich Johann Helmke. In Bremen she attended the Lyceum from 1911 to 1921 . This was followed by stays abroad in England and Belgium .

In 1935 she married Ludwig Fera, with whom she moved to Hamburg in 1949. They had four children together; the daughter Monika von Savigny is a local politician in Frankfurt-Westend , the son Peter W. Fera is a film and television producer.

politics

Fera joined the CDU in 1951. From 1957 to 1993 she was a member of the citizenship of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . The main focus of her political work outside of Parliament was women's and social policy. In parliament she was the senior president from 1974 to 1993 and was a member of the board of the citizenship. Despite the great commitment in many areas of society, the Citizenship Handbook consistently stated that the profession was housewife. The citizenry elected her as a member of the Federal Assembly , which in 1964 re-elected Heinrich Lübke as Federal President.

Within the CDU, she took on many tasks into old age. Among other things, she was President of the European Women's Union and, from 1983, Secretary General of the World Union of Christian Democratic Women . As the latter, she took part in the UN World Conference on Women in Copenhagen and Nairobi. In 1988 she became a member of the federal board of the Seniors' Union and chairwoman of the Hamburg regional association. In 1990 he was appointed Deputy Federal Chairwoman.

She initiated and got involved in many initiatives. In the social field, she was among other things co-founder of the Hamburg Women's Association (today: Landesfrauenrat ). In 1956 she became the first chairman of the Aktion Gesundheit Jugend initiative . From 1962 to 1984 she was second chairwoman of the German Institute for Foreigners and for several years she was also a member of the administrative board of the public library .

She exercised her church commitment from 1958 to 1982 on the board of the Evangelical Lutheran St. Matthew Church in Hamburg-Winterhude and from 1966 to 1971 as a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Hamburg state .

She was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg.

Honors

  • Because of her decades of work in political, church and social associations, initiatives and parties, she received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1976 and the Great in 1985.
  • In 1993 she received the Mayor Stolten Medal , one of the city's highest honors awarded by the Senate.
