Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by a twelve-cylinder - diesel engine of Wärtsilä Sulzer (Type: 12RTA96C) with 63,917  kW power driven. The engine acts on a propeller . The ship is equipped with a bow thruster . Four diesel generators, each with an output of 3000 kW, are available for the power supply on board.

The deck superstructures are in the rear third of the ship. There are 15 holds in front of the deckhouse and five behind it. Additional containers can be loaded on deck above the maneuvering station at the stern of the ship . On deck, 17 containers can be stowed next to each other and up to eight layers on top of each other. For the lower two layers there are 6 cell guides on deck from hatch. In front of the foremost hold there is a breakwater to protect against overflowing water.

The ship can load 10,457  TEU , including 700 reefer containers. With a homogeneous loading with 14 t heavy containers, the capacity is 6600 TEU. Maersk Line will market the ship with a capacity of 8194 TEU.

On the evening of 7 July 2010, a fire broke out on board the ship in the area of the deck container on hatch 6. The ship, which was used in the liner service between Europe and Asia, was at that time with a crew of 21 from Denmark , Ukraine , India and the Philippines , in the Malakka Strait on the way from Port Klang in Malaysia to Salala in Oman . The fire spread rapidly in the area of the deck container on hatch 6. It was initially fought with on-board means.

On the morning of July 8th, an attempt was made to extinguish the fire using a fire-fighting aircraft . However, this was not successful, so the fire fighting on board was continued. During the course of the day, auxiliary ships reached the damaged vessel so that the fire could now also be fought from the waterside.

During the afternoon of July 8, the open fire was largely extinguished. However, the affected area was very hot and there were still pockets of fire, and there was still fire inside containers. On the evening of July 9, firefighters who had been flown in from the Netherlands reached the ship and took over the further fire fighting on board, which was continued in the following period.

On July 18, the ship Tanjung Pelepas called in Malaysia. Here the cargo was unloaded and the ship was examined for damage, which was then repaired. Around 160 containers were damaged and partially destroyed in the fire. The exact cause of the fire could not be determined, but it was assumed that the fire had broken out in a container with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide ( UN No. 3015) loaded on deck . The ship had also loaded several containers with calcium hypochlorite on the hatch, which was primarily affected by the fire , which acts as an oxidizing agent and was responsible for several fires on container ships.

The crew of the ship later received a commendation from the IMO for their mission.
