Charo (2004)

Charo (* 13. March 1951 in Murcia , Spain ; real name María Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza ) is an American singer , actress and flamenco - guitarist .

Career

Charo learned to play the classical flamenco guitar from Andrés Segovia and was later named “Best Flamenco Guitarist” twice in the Guitar Player magazine . In 1966 she married the 66-year-old orchestra conductor Xavier Cugat , who took her to the United States. First she performed with her husband's orchestra in New York City and Las Vegas . From the mid-1960s, she began appearing on US entertainment shows.

According to the official Spanish birth documents, Charo was born as early as 1941. The matter ended up in a US court in 1977. She claimed to have given her age incorrectly in order to be able to legally marry the much older Cugat at the age of 15. Ultimately, 1951 was certified as the year of birth after her parents sworn in. After she obtained US citizenship that same year, she divorced Cugat.

In the 1970s, like Frank Sinatra , Ray Charles and Dean Martin, she had her own shows in Las Vegas. During this time, Charo appeared in a wide variety of TV formats, guest roles in series such as Love Boat and Fantasy Island came in numerous talk shows, including 16 on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show . Here she stood out for her lively personality, her strong Spanish accent and the saying Cuchi-Cuchi , which became her trademark. Charo also selected this for her first album, which was released in 1977 by the disco label Salsoul and recorded with the Salsoul Orchestra . The album reached number 123 on the US charts. The song Dance a Little Bit Closer developed it into a hit in the American disco charts (number 18) and also placed at number 44 in Great Britain. Charo continued to record disco records until the early 1980s, Olé Olé (1978) and Stay With Me (1979) were also successful in the corresponding charts. In addition, she recorded the theme song of the TV series Love Boat in disco sound and the ABBA ballad Chiquitita in 1981 .

During the 1980s, Charo largely retired from show business and moved to Hawaii. However, she continued to occasionally appear on television shows such as The New Hollywood Squares . It was not until the late 1990s that it reappeared more frequently, including in advertising campaigns for Sprint Nextel and Geico . In 2004 she was on the reality show The Surreal Life .

In 2008 she released the single España Cañi , which made it to number 24 in the US dance club charts in June 2011.

In 2017 she took part in the 24th season of Dancing with the Stars , but left early.

In February 2019, her husband Kjell Rasten, who suffered from the blistering skin disease bullous pemphigoid , committed suicide. Charo and Rasten had been married since 1978. The two have a son, Shell Rasten, who is also a musician.
