Carlo Cardinal Chiarlo (born November 4, 1881 in Pontremoli , Province of Massa-Carrara , Italy , † January 21, 1964 in Lucca ) was a Vatican diplomat and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Carlo Chiarlo studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Lucca and Rome . He received on 28 May 1904, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a pastor and as a lecturer in the Archdiocese of Lucca . In 1917 he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican and worked until 1922 as secretary for the Apostolic Nunciature in Peru . From 1922 to 1928 he worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on October 12, 1928 titular Archbishop of Amida dei Siri . The episcopal ordination received Carlo Chiarlo on 11 November of that year by Cardinal Pietro Gasparri ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop of Curia Giovanni Volpi and Teodor Kubina , Bishop of Częstochowa . From 1928 to 1932 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Bolivia . In January 1932 he was appointed Apostolic Internuntius for Central America, based in Costa Rica . Until September 30, 1933, Guatemala , Honduras , Nicaragua , Panama and El Salvador also belonged to his area of ​​responsibility . With the establishment of independent nunciatures in these six states, he was given responsibility for Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama, while Archbishop Albert Lavame was entrusted with the management of the nunciatures in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador . In 1940/41 (date uncertain) he returned to Rome and became the papal special envoy for the care of prisoners of war . In 1945 Carlo Chiarlo headed the special papal mission in Germany , from 1946 to 1954 he was apostolic nuncio in Brazil , from 1954 to 1958 he was nuncio for special tasks in the Vatican State Secretariat .

Pope John XXIII accepted Carlo Chiarlo on December 15, 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria in Portico in the cardinals college . Carlo Cardinal Chiarlo took part in the conclave of 1963 and in the first two sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

He died on January 21, 1964 in Lucca and was buried in the local cemetery there.
